Timber sale preparation and administration
Sept. 10, 9:30 a.m. - 3:30 p.m., WalkerA day-long workshop for both foresters and loggers, designed to equip foresters with strategies to communicate silvicultural objectives effectively to loggers and put together sales that are marketable and meet silvicultural objectives. Throughout the day we'll have a mix of indoor and field sessions that come at the timber sale process from multiple different angles. Forest management for culturally significant species
Sept. 23, 9 a.m. - 3 p.m., Fond du Lac ReservationThis field-based workshop, held in partnership with Fond du Lac Natural Resource Management, will address forest management strategies managers can use to meet cultural use goals regardless of their landbase. We’ll focus on sugar maple management for sap production, cedar silviculture, adding and/or retaining paper birch, and promoting blueberries and other culturally useful non-tree species. Forest Management Guidelines (FMG) field day
Oct. 9, 10 a.m. - 3:30 p.m., CottonIt’s time to register for a Fall 2025 FMG field day. We’ll discuss practical applications of Minnesota’s Forest Management Guidelines, with a focus on timber sale planning, riparian management zones, leave trees, and site infrastructure and layout. Prescribed fire in practice: Hybrid webinar and field tour
Nov. 4, 9 a.m. - 1 p.m., Cloquet Forestry CenterLane Johnson with the Cloquet Forestry Center will facilitate a panel discussion with practitioners from federal, tribal and non-profit backgrounds. They'll discuss their approaches to leveraging limited capacity for burning, preparing timber stand project areas for prescribed fire, reducing barriers to get more fire on the ground, and developing agreement. After the webinar, we'll continue the conversation in the woods as we walk the grounds of the Cloquet Forestry Center and visit some recently burned stands. Symposium on carbon and forest management
Nov. 12, 10 a.m. - 3:30 p.m., Cloquet Forestry CenterEarlier this year, a team of researchers from the University of Minnesota and partner organizations published a report on the important roles forest and forest management play in mitigating climate change through carbon sequestration and storage. We’re planning a fall symposium to hear from the researchers about what they found and how it can inform forest management moving forward.
