Hi all,

There are several webinars in this University of Minnesota Sustainable Forest Education Cooperative update which you may find interesting. The first, on September 9, presents what's been learned from experimental research on juvenile tree response to climate change. The research has been conducted, in part, here in the Ely area.

The webinars are free. You will need to register to attend.

Upcoming workshops and events:

Webinar: Juvenile tree response to climate change: B4WarmED project update
Sept. 9, 9-10 a.m., Online

Juvenile trees are the future of our forests. Understanding how they might fare under future temperature and moisture conditions is critical to planning forest stewardship. In this talk Rebecca Montgomery will present some of the lessons learned from the Boreal Forest Warming at an Ecotone in Danger (B4WarmED) project. Click here to view the B4WarmED project update event page and register for the free SFEC 2025 webinar series.

Timber sale preparation and administration
Sept. 10, 9:30 a.m. - 3:30 p.m., Walker

A day-long workshop for both foresters and loggers, designed to equip foresters with strategies to communicate silvicultural objectives effectively to loggers and put together sales that are marketable and meet silvicultural objectives. Throughout the day we'll have a mix of indoor and field sessions that come at the timber sale process from multiple different angles. Click here to view the timber sale preparation and administration event page and register.

Forest management for culturally significant species
Sept. 23, 9 a.m. - 3 p.m., Fond du Lac Reservation

This field-based workshop, held in partnership with Fond du Lac Natural Resource Management, will address forest management strategies managers can use to meet cultural use goals regardless of their landbase. We’ll focus on sugar maple management for sap production, cedar silviculture, adding and/or retaining paper birch, and promoting blueberries and other culturally useful non-tree species. Click here to view the forest management for culturally significant species event page and register.

Forest Management Guidelines (FMG) field day
Oct. 9, 10 a.m. - 3:30 p.m., Cotton

It’s time to register for a Fall 2025 FMG field day. We’ll discuss practical applications of Minnesota’s Forest Management Guidelines, with a focus on timber sale planning, riparian management zones, leave trees, and site infrastructure and layout. Workshop open to both resource managers and loggers. Click here to view the Forest Management Guidelines field day event page; registration is live!

Webinar: Post-ash silviculture
Oct. 14, 9-10 a.m., Online

Dustin Bronson will talk about ash-dominated wet forests and what silvicultural strategies exist to keep these systems forested in the face of emerald ash borer. The range and efficacy of different approaches, as well as favorable replacement species (and those that have not been as successful!) will be discussed. Click here to view the post-ash silviculture event page and register for the free SFEC 2025 webinar series.

Prescribed fire in practice: Hybrid webinar and field tour
Nov. 4, 9 a.m. - 1 p.m., Cloquet Forestry Center

Lane Johnson with the Cloquet Forestry Center will facilitate a panel discussion with practitioners from federal, tribal and non-profit backgrounds. They'll discuss their approaches to leveraging limited capacity for burning, preparing timber stand project areas for prescribed fire, reducing barriers to get more fire on the ground, and developing agreement. After the webinar, we'll continue the conversation in the woods as we walk the grounds of the Cloquet Forestry Center and visit some recently burned stands. Click here to view the prescribed fire in practice event page and register!

Symposium on carbon and forest management
Nov. 12, 10 a.m. - 3:30 p.m., Cloquet Forestry Center

Earlier this year, a team of researchers from the University of Minnesota and partner organizations published a report on the important roles forest and forest management play in mitigating climate change through carbon sequestration and storage. We’re planning a fall symposium to hear from the researchers about what they found and how it can inform forest management moving forward.
