Chipping Sparrow Snatching Mealworms on the Wing
clever...@gmail.com
Last year I discovered that a chipping sparrow, “Chippy,” could grab a mealworm from my fingertips while in flight. To my surprise, this year he outdid himself and took three in quick succession while airborne. The attached video shows him grabbing the third one after a couple of misses. On one occasion he tried to air-grab a forth one but fumbled it. He flew down, recovered his own fumble and flew off with the four mealworms to feed his young.
