December is just the beginning of a great time of year. As winter weather settles in and the birds that will spend it with it develop their connections to food resources, we can learn where to find them.
2025 produced food resources that birds are connected to and birds and other wildlife that have found adequate supplies will actively harvest at various locations. We notice trees and shrubs at home and during our travels due to the various feeding activities on fruit and seeds
If we have feeding stations which supply more variety of seeds, fruit, suet and other options, a parade of birds may come and go throughout the day.
Today at my home it has been black-capped chickadees, red-breasted nuthatches, white-breasted nuthatches, blue jays, Canada jays, pine grosbeaks, evening grosbeaks, downy woodpeckers, hairy woodpeckers and an occasional red squirrel.
I hope it will be a day like this on Dec 27 for them to be counted and reported on the Ely Christmas Bird Count. I wonder what I will see this afternoon when I am running errands in town?
