July 2026

Hi folks

This month we will meet on July 14th at 4pm at the Ely Community Center to talk with Aaron Kania, candidate for Minnesota House District 3A. We have met Aaron before at Climate Group meetings and at Tuesday Group. As our local District Ranger he spoke with Ely Climate Group about FOREST HEALTH in November 2023, https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JKeMzArc1rg  and on PREPARATION FOR WILDFIRES in June 2025 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xEj0NCge5bg&t=316s

Aaron’s background includes 6 years as a Forest Service Ranger, 23 years in community law enforcement protecting public lands, and many years as a wildland firefighter. He is also a hunter, fisherman and general outdoorsman. He has settled on Lake Vermilion with his wife and two daughters. Here is his campaign website https://kaniaforhouse.com/

Bring your questions about how he plans to represent our local region, especially on issues having to do with the environment, climate, and how we can become a more resilient community.

Topic: Ely Climate Group meeting with Aaron Kania

Meeting ID: 835 1896 9179

Passcode: 553050

For those who might have missed it, or want to watch again, our meeting with Steve Piragis and Andrea Strom is available on youtube here https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EZ2GlhaykRI&t=3127s Andrea describes the work they do to run “Brainstorm Bakery” in an environmentally sensitive way. Steve makes an excellent case for solar energy. To quote him “If I had more roofs I would put up more solar panels”. He has covered the roofs of his store in town and his home, and expanded to some ground mounted panels. He describes the details. If you are contemplating getting solar at your business or home this discussion will help.

We are pleased to report that a couple of Ely nonprofits have recently used the state’s free energy audits, and two have started the process of getting quotes on solar installation, detailing upfront costs and downline savings, with financing options. The 30% federal rebate still exists for businesses and nonprofits. Look around as you pass through Ely, there are a lot of solar roofs! We need more!

Thanks for all your help and interest, hoping to see you Tues July 14th to talk with Aaron Kania
