Early this evening I witnessed a Bald Eagle in hot pursuit of a bird I couldn’t positively identify. For a couple of minutes the two birds swooped and dove over Burntside Lake. Finally the eagle caught its prey but both birds ended up in the water in the middle of the lake.

While I quickly launched the kayak I lost track of the eagle. Once I paddled out and determined it was a snow goose, I thought I would place it along the shoreline. It was far too heavy for the eagle to lift it out of the water. Within a couple of minutes the eagle came flying in and perched in a tree near the shoreline. The bird was very wet and scruffy looking after being in the water and was busy preening and drying out its wings.

As I paddled back home the eagle found the goose on the shoreline and was enjoying his well earned dinner.
