When the last of the three pine warblers I’d been feeding stopped coming on May 31, I thought it might be the last I’d see of them this year. We’ve kept busy, though, by a pair of chipping sparrows that’s raising a family off our mealworms, hauling off scores of them each day to the nest. But then, after a 26-day absence, one of the male pine warblers returned and since then it’s been “move over Chippy, Biggie is back in town.” (Biggie is his nickname because he was noticeably larger than the other two pine warblers.) At first there were some skirmishes, but they seemed to have reached an understanding and are at least tolerating each other’s presence.
