Pop music's Rocket Man surprises his fans with concerts in Kitchener, Sudbury in March

Elton John may be studying his map of Ontario in coming weeks as he and his mates prepare to play first-time concerts in two unlikely places.
Kitchener and Sudbury got word late yesterday afternoon that the top-selling musician will play both cities' biggest auditoriums in a pair of shows in early March.
The two Ontario concerts are the singer's only North American shows scheduled this year outside a residency at a Las Vegas casino and two dates in the western United States.
News that The Rocket Man -- a pop music icon with more than 200 million album sales under his belt -- will touch down at the Aud on Mon., March 3 caught many fans by surprise.
"After they get over the disbelief, they will be lined up around the corner and down the block," predicts Mark Logan, owner of Kitchener's Encore Records, and a fan since age 12.
The Kitchener Memorial Auditorium plans to open up extra seating for the show, offering about 6,700 tickets for sale starting Friday at 10 a.m.
Tickets will cost $87.50 and $129.50, plus service charges. Tickets will be limited to six per person.
While Logan jokingly speculated the singer "lost a bet" because he's coming to Kitchener, others said it's characteristic of an artist who tries to play new cities whenever he can.
John was already scheduled to be in Ontario to perform at a private charity event in Toronto March 1.
"I don't know a lot of details, but I do know he was looking for some venues he hadn't been in yet," said Aud manager Kim Kugler.
"But as for why Kitchener and Sudbury, I don't know for sure."
She expects the show to sell out within the first hour of ticket sales, and won't be surprised to see diehard fans camped out Thursday night.
The 10,885 tickets for John's April 12 show in Pullman, Wash., sold out in three hours and 40 minutes yesterday morning.
Logan, who hopes to be at the Aud on March 3, expects fans from across northeastern U.S. and Canada "to fly in for this one."
"If you're on the East Coast of this continent, this is the closest he'll be this year," he said. "He's got almost 40 years of listeners who would be ecstatic to hear him play."
The Aud has hosted big names before, such as Led Zeppelin, The Supremes and Bob Dylan, but Kugler said John may be the "most renowned" artist ever to take the stage there.
"To have somebody still in the highlight of their career . . . (this) pretty much stands alone on its own."
Riley O'Connor, chair of the company promoting John's two Ontario shows, said there should be no surprise the singer agreed to play two mid-size cities not always on the beaten path for big-name acts.
"Elton John has a touring history of playing markets that are non-traditional," he said in an e-mail.
"He plays markets he has never played in his career.''
Tickets will be available through all Ticketmaster outlets, the Aud's box office, and Centre In The Square's box office.
Sir Elton John is taking his greatest hits tour to Ontario.
The pop legend is set to perform in Sudbury on March 2 and Kitchener on March 3.
Sudbury Arena's manager says the city is thrilled to host the music giant, known for such hits as "Rocket Man," "Bennie and the Jets," and "Your Song."
Tickets for both shows go on sale Friday, with ticket prices ranging from $87.50 to $129.50.
Tour promoter Live Nation says there are no plans to announce additional Canadian dates.
John is set to spend the bulk of March and early part of April performing in Las Vegas.
"This will indeed be the biggest concert in Sudbury's history," Ray Mensour, Sudbury Arena manager, said Monday in a release.
"This concert is monumental and will generate tremendous excitement for everyone in our city."
Kim Kugler of the Kitchener Memorial Auditorium Complex said the show will create similar buzz in his southern Ontario city.
"In the 58 years of the auditorium's history, this is the most renowned artist we have ever had on our stage," Kugler said in a release.
The concert is part of John's 2008 Tour: Rocket Man - Number Ones.
A companion CD released last year features digitally mastered hits spanning the first three decades of his career.
