'The Scion of Ikshvaku' is the latest book from the pen of Amish who shot into fame with his 'Shiva Triology, comprising 'The Immortals of Meluha, The Secret of the Nagas and the Oath of the Vayuputras. I should say that I found this latest work as enjoyable , if not more, frankly speaking, as his earlier ones. He has now  woven a beautiful story of his own around Rama, Sita, Lakshman and other characters    and various situations  found in the Ramayana. But you cant dismiss it saying it is only another version of Ramayana.  The story is told in quite an imaginative manner and the author's knowledge of our mythology, folklore and traditions finds its  full scope embellishing  the story throughout.and  in this respect it is unique.   And what a delightful reading it makes!  You dont feel like putting down the book once you begin reading it.No wonder we feel simply captivated by the author's narrative style. Rama-the upholder of Dharma-a true leader-one  with no blemish whatsoever -stands out in all his glory in the story woven around him and it is not yet over for Amish is going to continue-------in another book or two more-we dont know. This is only the first book in Ram Chandra Series, we are told.

Dear All

Prof. Rajagopalan has indeed been active reading books and writing reviews unlike many of us. He is thus indirectly encouraging us to do likewise. We keep telling our students that reading and listening, especially reading, are the only means of keeping themselves in touch with the language and enhancing their language skills, but how many of us practise this ourselves? I hope all English teachers take inspiration and the cue from his admirable forays into books. He has once again set the ball rolling. Will we follow in his footsteps?

Instead of merely praising him for his initiative and reviews in one-liners, we should, each one of us, read the two books he has reviewed and share our own views on them. We may agree entirely, or partly, with his views, or we may disagree with him on these books, but we should engage in meaningful discussion on the books. Some of you can start sharing views on the books you have read.

Get, set, go!

Ramani
(Dr. P. N. Ramani)

Yes Prof. Ramani. You are so right. I saw the book by Abdul Kalam in our library and will try to get it issued to read personally.

As it is, I have come to love and respect the man!

With regards
