In their Synopsis of Psychiatry: Behaviors and Models of Care, Kaplan and Sadock describe four key models of treatment in psychiatry: Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy, Behavior Therapy, Family Therapy, and Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy-Relation. They go on to describe the model's strengths and weaknesses. After briefly reviewing the literature on the model, they conclude with practical implications. The important issues are discussed including (but not limited to) potential applications to children, adolescents, couples, parents, teachers, and other caregivers. Also described is how the various models might be applied to various personality disorders, including ASPD, Bipolar Disorder, Major Depression, Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder, Agoraphobia, and Specific Phobia.
Following the review of the literature, they go on to describe four related models in greater detail. Model One examines how patients with ASPD respond to a variety of social and environmental factors, including stressors, and how patients with Bipolar Disorder respond to stressors. Model Two examines the relationship between family dysfunction, delinquency, substance abuse/ dependence, and parental separation in terms of family stress and adjustment problems.
The final chapter "Managing Adolescent and Family Stress," describes a model which examines how families may respond differently to a variety of stressors. This model also addresses the need for effective interpersonal communication skills, assertive parenting, and parental encouragement. This course was a great read for me because it brought a new light on Kaplan's work. I enjoyed this book and recommend it to other therapists and students in the field.
