The Underground Doctor: A Textbook You Will Never Forget is written by Dr. David Carbonell. This is one of the first books I bought that was based on a true story. This novel is chock full of medical terms and procedures along with great detail of what it is like to work in a doctor's office, complete with descriptions of the lab, itself, and the tools/equipment that are using to help out your doctors. No matter what kind of medical practitioner you are, or what kind of hospital facility you work in, this novel will be an invaluable tool in helping you understand how everything works.
The Underground Doctor also covers the side jobs and other miscellaneous facts about being a physician and working in the medical field. Whether you are a primary care doctor or a surgeon, you'll find out all about your job responsibilities and what your employer requires of you on a daily basis. From medical terminology to lab procedures, this book will keep you well informed and give you the confidence to talk to patients about their medical conditions. Dr. Carbonell does a great job of keeping the story short and to the point and doesn't drag the story out at all, which is a great thing for someone writing an informative book like this. I enjoyed reading through the entire book in one sitting and then finished up reading it again so that I wouldn't forget any important information I had learned.
I definitely recommend The Underground Doctor to anyone who enjoys reading medical novels and wants to get a deeper understanding of what doctors do day in and day out. From simple descriptions of lab work and procedures to intricate descriptions of actual surgery (which I had never done before), Carbonell takes us through every possible aspect of a typical workday and writes it down in great detail, making this a very enjoyable and informative read. If you've always wanted to learn more about what it takes to be a doctor but don't know where to start, then The Underground Doctor by Dr. Carol Dierks is a great place to start. In addition to the book itself, you can also purchase the Underground Doctor audio version, which features interviews with Dr. Carbonell as well as others in the medical community. I highly recommend both versions.
