Brown Girl Dreaming by Jacqueline Woodson is the third in the My Pretty Pony series, written as a sequel to Pony for My Princess. The book covers the years the author as a young girl growing up in rural South Carolina and New York City. It also talks about her childhood dream of becoming a writer. It is intended to be a coming of age story that will eventually become a novel.
There are many wonderful things about this book besides the fact that it is about young girls going through puberty. It is also written very simply and in a simple way that even children can understand. In addition, it deals mainly with how children's dreams often do not come true, but also just dreams, which is what the title says. Many of the chapters deal primarily with the dreams that the ponies had while they were younger. It also includes some information about what happens after the dream, as well as how the dreams change as the young woman grows older.
The main character for this book is named Brown. As a child, she had some dreams that would later come true. Woodson does not focus much on the life of Brown while she was growing up, but the book is not devoid of interesting information about her family and other aspects of her life. I enjoyed the characters' descriptions and found the way the language was toned down and made more understandable a pleasant experience. Readers should know that the reader will have to put up with a fairly brief plot, although some of the events are quite dramatic, including those involving Brown's family. This book has excellent illustrations that capture the essence of the book as well.
