Calculus & Its Applications PDF File
In Calculus & Its Applications by Goldstein and Cohen, the first part is devoted to introducing students to algebra and calculus concepts, and the second part explains the necessary functions needed in Calculus to solve problems. The third section consists of twelve topics, the last eight of which are related to the first eight. Goldstein & Cohen also provide some calculations in graphical form in a couple of appendixes.
Calculus & Its Applications by Goldstein and Cohen has many features in common with other textbooks on calculus. They both begin with exponents, but they do it in different ways. In addition, both books have helpful text for working through problems using the familiar set of tools such as graphs, partial functions and series; the only difference is that the former uses real numbers while the latter uses complex numbers only. The main theme is the development of calculus through the introduction of algebra, and the book describes in great detail the related notions of integrals, derivatives and calculus series. For instance, they describe the derivative notion (one of the more interesting concepts in calculus) in detail and provide an extended example using a simple function, later on explaining the concept of the integral in much greater depth.
Goldstein & Cohen do an excellent job of laying out the necessary concepts. Their book is very thorough and extremely clear. It includes both text and illustrations for every topic and section, making the book easy to read. The book is recommended for high school students who already know all of the material in higher mathematics and for those who wish to learn Calculus in a straightforward manner that will not confuse or overwhelm them. The book is also highly regarded because of its detailed, accessible style and excellent layout.
