In Art History Vol 1 6th Edition by Stokstad, the reader is introduced to the term "ulpture." It was previously known as figurative art. Through Stokstad's thorough research of ancient sculptures and the many periods in which their creators lived, he produces a book that would be categorized in the category of Pre-Raphaelites, Pre-Impressionists, Romanticists, and Expressionists. This book provides many examples of the works that span these time periods. The text is organized by chronological regions, and each chapter corresponds to a region such as Ancient Greece, China, Egypt, Europe, or America.
Stokstad begins with an account of art history from the perspective of the artist. Examples are seen through his personal experience of encountering art, through his education and training as an art history professor, and finally, through his life. There is no introduction of non-art, such as theater, literature, or cinema, and there are no works on architectural architecture. The majority of the book consists of one of Stokstad's famous paintings or a portrait drawn from his long life experience.
Part two of Art History Vol 1 6th Edition by Fred Stokstad includes chapters that address other aspects of art history. The focus turns to painting, drawing, photography, sculpture, printmaking, and multimedia art. One of the most interesting chapters is "The Age of Revolution," which charts the evolution of European attitudes towards religion, politics, and individualism from the Renaissance to the French Revolution, and finally to the First World War. I especially like "Renaissance Painting," in which Stokstad compares the various artists during the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries with the various topics of painting during this period. I also particularly enjoyed "The Concept of a Master Artist," which looks at the concept of artistic genius through the ages, and compares different artists through the mediums used, discusses the different types of artistic temperament, and presents examples of great painters throughout the ages.
