Elementary Statistics: Picturing the World by Larson. If you are in school or planning to attend one, this is a great book to read. Illustrations and texts are clear and precise, as are the footnotes. This text is appropriate for statistics students who need a solid introduction to basic data and graph drawing. In fact, all statistics textbooks must include some sort of statistics illustrations, as these visual aids can make the subject much more interesting.
It would be an oversimplification to say that this book teaches you anything about elementary stats. Rather, it presents statistical methods and concepts in an easy-to-understand manner, making the topic not too challenging for a student who has never encountered an important statistic table or chart. In fact, many of the charts and graphs are so simple to understand that most students can already figure out how to interpret them. However, the authors do include some interesting tips and tricks, particularly regarding training the student to use various kinds of statistical tools.
The book is well organized. There are at least 20 color photographs throughout, and the book is well indexed, with concise references and a list of relevant books listed at the beginning of each chapter. All in all, this is a good book for any student to start learning about elementary stats. However, if the student already has some knowledge of statistics through another source (for example, using a spreadsheet), he may want to consider another book that presents statistics in a more engaging way. This book is also helpful for those who are new to statistics and would like to brush up their knowledge. Those who are looking for an engaging and thorough introduction to elementary stats should definitely look towards this book.
