Artemis PDF File
It seems like the only thing people can think about when it comes to Artemis is her looks and those great big sunglasses she wears. Yes, without a doubt, Artemis is an incredibly beautiful woman who is not only sought after by men but also beautiful women. Her looks were originally created by the Roman poet Ovid, and he based her on the Medusa of Greek mythology. In that story, Medusa had a snake-like duality, looking both like a woman and a monster at the same time.
While many people assume that Artemis is an old mythological Greek goddess, she is actually not. Artemis is a Cycian goddess, born at the island of Artemis in Ithaca (the place where the helmets used by soldiers from the Pelasgians later came from). Her name, which means "woman of the sea", was given to her by the Greek poet Homer during his Illiad series. When Odysseus arrived in Troy, he carried her off with him as his lover. Homer made her immortal and eligible for any number of divine honors, including the right to be the patron deity of Apollo.
Artemis is not only one of the most popular and powerful goddesses in Greek mythology, but she is also a very traditional one. She is often represented holding two coins: one symbolizing her status as a goddess and one representing her marital status. Many coins show her wearing both a crown and a thimble, an indication that she is married. As she is associated with the sea, it's no wonder that she is often represented swimming or lying on a boat. Her role as a goddess gives her the ability to control many things including the sea, the winds, rains, and many other forces of nature and she is definitely not one to be taken lightly.
