I'm currently having a problem with my system where the full 2560x1440 resolution of my Dell U2711 monitor isn't well supported by my ASUS G73S laptop (it has an NVIDIA GeForce GTX440M CUDA with 1.5GB RAM). The laptop doesn't have DVI-D or DisplayPort outputs and the monitor doesn't officially support that resolution over HDMI. So, to work around it I added a "Custom Resolution" in the nvidia control panel. This works until the computer sleeps or reboots, at which point it stops working and the display driver freaks out, refusing to display on either the internal or external display until I unplug the HDMI connector.
No, if you read my comment, I said the GeForce experience is not needed. I'm talking about the Nvidia Control Panel you access through your PC's control panel. It controls the 3D settings on your PC, but it's not something that's constantly running in the background, it just tells your GPU what settings to use. You sometimes need to change your global settings, to enable your GPU to be used in programs such as Minecraft, since by default, it will use your CPU integrated graphics over your GPU.
I'm having a little issue with my bourgeoisie Windows XP Pro. 32-bit machine (i7-3770k OCed to 4.5GHz, 16GB DDR3-2400, 980 ti; also runs Vista and soon 7; I'll probs eventually make a post dedicated to it and link it here). I have noticed that in the Nvidia control panel, my Dell S2417DG monitor (using the Displayport input) shows up as a CRT, and prevents me from using some advanced features of the control panel, as well as I suspect proper resolution support in some older games (both NFS Underground games for example).
Neither buying any DVI monitor would solve any problems for you... As I have already told you this is an Nvidia driver problem that is NOT port specific. On the screenshot where I showed the custom resolution registry settings I used an 1680x1050 DVI monitor and as can be seen on the underlying Nvidia control panel it's also falsely identified as HDTV... So you should finally realize that this NVidia driver problem is not monitor/port specific at all. It affects even traditional CRT monitors. If you want to use properly working XP setup you have to use older (less buggy) Nvidia drivers but older drivers only work with older GPU. So instead of changing your monitor you should change your graphics card instead.
I personally wouldn't be messing with these nV control panel items. The sim itself has a full range of settings. Back in the days of DirectX9 games where the game itself offered just a resolution setting and maybe a single low/medium/high slider, this nV control panel stuff was useful. Not so much anymore. There are combinations that will do really bad stuff between the options in the sim and the options here.
I am new to CUDA Development. I installed CUDA Toolkit 8.0 on my laptop running Windows 10 home and has a GTX 960M. Before Installing CUDA Toolkit, the context menu on desktop (right-click on desktop) used to have an option to access Nvidia Control Panel. And there also used to be system tray icons for accessing GeForce experience and GPU Activity status icon. But after Installing CUDA Toolkit, these icons and options are no longer visible. And when I try to launch the Nvidia control panel from the System Control Panel, an error dialog box appears stating - "Nvidia Display Settings are not available. You are not currently using a display attached to Nvidia GPU."I don't understand what this means. Did I mess-up the CUDA Toolkit Installation? Do I have to re-install the Display Drivers and the CUDA Toolkit?
