Hi,

Inspired by the success of the Go Slack community, and spending less and less time in IRC and more and more in Slack, I decided to create a Slack org for Elixir as well.

If you are already using Slack at work then you have no excuse not to join. And if you are not then maybe it's a good reason to give Slack a try, it's really nice.

There are a couple of us chatting there already (mostly people from the Elixir London meetup), so if you want to join here's the link:

Looking forward to seeing some you there!

Hey Steve,

I’m all for making the community accessible, but I really think a centralized IRC channel is the best thing for us focus on. Splitting the mediums is going to make it harder to keep up, provide help, etc. We have a great thing going on on the IRC side of things, so lets keep it up :)

Hi Chris,

I definitely agree with that, my goal is not to split the medium at all, and I don't believe it will.

I just like the idea of having a chat room for people not on IRC but who happens to be running Slack all day. Nothing more.

Hope it will dismiss your fears.

While we're on the subject, can anyone recommend their favorite IRC client for OS X?

Related, I can’t recommend irccloud enough (https://www.irccloud.com) it’s $5 a month and take a lot of the annoyance out of IRC.

I like LimeChat http://limechat.net/mac/. But if you already use Emacs, ERC is really awesome.

+1 on irccloud
I use it with Fluid (http://fluidapp.com/), and I'm super happy with it.

+1 to irccloud. They have some pretty solid mobile apps as well.

LimeChat is awesome. Colloquy too. Both are free

Just a quick update, it's now much easier to join the group, enter your email here https://elixir-slackin.herokuapp.com/ and you'll get an invite straight away

There are quite a few of us there now, so it should make for some interesting conversations!

Johnny, have you tried https://www.irccloud.com ? Arguably similar interface to slack, but over irc.

Slack is such a better experience than IRC.

How does an existing member login?

I've been locked out of elixir-slack since i reinstalled my machine. Each time I put in my email it tells me i'm an existing member; no redirects nothing, well guess i'll stick to IRC, it's a lot simpler, with no no hassles

cheers
