Heyas,

I am wondering about the purpose of this group. Is it supposed to be
strictly for bug discussions, or are usability questions also
apropos?

For the sake of this initial email, I'll go under the assumption that
usability questions are acceptable.

I am turning people at my work on to ELive in specific and FLOSS in
general. I've got a buzz started based strictly on the sheer beauty
of Gem, but there are some tasks that will have to be simplified in
order for people to be able to use ELive on a daily basis.

One of the primary tasks is access to shared drive space. I can mount
drives manually via command line, but there does not seem to be any
easy way for people to mount a cifs/smb share with Elive, unless I'm
missing something.

Thanks all, and if this email is outside the scope of this newsgroup,
I apologize.

Peace,
Vale

Hello,

Yes, this feature will be included (we hope) for the next stable
release, but the idea about how should it work is not approved yet,
remember that Elive does a big effort on making it easy to use and
specially, intuitive.

I need to do tests, but my main idea right now is this one:
- thunar (file-manager), when click on a directory to have the option
to share it
- (from the internet menus): there's an application to mount remove
directories, maybe with other features like listing actually shared
directories by the user, etc
- maybe some helpful things on the thunar feature like saying to the
user which external IP has, and where is the application to mount the
directory on the remote user

Ok... ideas about how should work and how is the easiest/handy way to
have it are welcome, since specially is something to implement these
days :)

Have a nice day

This has been my problem with Elive also. Not so much Samba but NFS support or at least easy NFS support would be nice.

OK!

It is implemented for the uploading (wait a few hours) ISO 1.9.47,
please try it and give us your feedback!, so that we need to know if
has the correctly level of userfriendly (and intuitive) for Elive :)

Way better so far. It kept my IP and DNS settings from the live usb to the hd install. It would go back to DHCP before on reboot. Setting up the network itself was a breeze and just took seconds.

Sharing network drives is better but has a ways to go. I was able set up and mount an NFS drive on the LAN but wasn't able export anything. I would get the dialog box and choose 1) Manage your Shared directories. click OK and nothing. Zip. Nada.

Other then this, awesome.

Well, this option should be removed from elpanel because is
deprecated, we are using another way

The thing is that Im not sure if is "sufficiently intuitive", so: you
have it on your Internet Applications menu, it is called "smb-browser"
and with it you can browse and mount remote shares on your computer,
it has a small reference in the Help tab saying about how to share
your directories, and basically is by right-clicking in a directory in
thunar, select "properties" and go in the Share tab.

So like i say, I need to know if is sufficiently intuitive on that way

Note: if you are using 1.9.47 and no 1.9.48, make sure that you have
the package smbclient installed and your user is on the group
sambashare (adduser username sambashare)

Good afternoon Thanatermesis,

You are correct, the functionality as it stands now is less than
intuitive. To take a page from other playbooks, OS X places the
'drive mapping tool' under the 'Go' menu item in the 'Finder' so
perhaps placing it under the 'Go' item in Thunar would be more
intuitive? Or create an entirely new menu "Data Connections" for FTP,
CIFS, SMB, etc.?

Couple of more things..
1- I cannot connect to Windows shares in a Windows domain. The smb-
browser returns a warning that it cannot find any shares then prompts
me for an userid and password for the fileserver if it requires a
login to view shares, which loops until I cancel the process. It
seems that the smb-browser is not seeing the shares available, and I
do not see an area to enter the path (\\123.123.123.133\someshare). I
can connect to the share(s) available with an Ubuntu system by
entering the full path (\\123.223.233.233\someshare).
2- When entering the password and userid, I cannot hit <enter> to
submit the information for authentication. I have to move the mouse
and click on 'Ok'. Not a big deal, but I thought I should mention it.

Peace,
V

A lot of changes are made recently, for example now instead of
"properties" it is directly on the right click list, the author of smb-
browser has made a good number of changes too, for example in the
first run it popups you with a message saying how to share directories
(since the user can see the application in the menu of applications
but may not know that is on thunar... althought it is not that hard to
found it on thunar (right now, new mode) since it is the common way
implemented on other systems like windows)

I recommend you to upgrade (maybe using the command "apt-get update ;
apt-get clean ; apt-get install --reinstall yourpackage") these next
packages to see the changes: smb-browser, smb-admin, thunar

If after the upgrade you see any bug, report it to http://bugs.elivecd.org
and assign it to LinuxNIT

Sorry for taking so long to get back to you.
I believe part of the problem may be on my end.
To answer your question though:

The output of (username in question is domain admin, btw)
smbclient -L 123.232....... -U username%password when using a DOMAIN
account is:
****************
session setu failed: NT_STATUS_LOGON_FAILURE
*********************

but when I run the same command using a local administrator account I
get:
******************
Sharename Type Comment
<Names of shares here>
Session request to 123.xxx.xxxx.xxx failed (Called name not present)
session request to 129 failes, (called name not present)
<Stuff about the OS>
Server Comment
<listing of various file servers>
******************

and for smbclient -NL 123.xxx.xxx.xxx

****************************
Anonymous Login successful
Domian=[blah] OS=[Windows etc.. blah]
Sharename Type Comment
cli_rpc_pipe_open: cli_nt_create failed on pipe \srvsvc to machine
123.xxx.xxx.xxx
Error was NT_STATUS_ACCESS_DENIED
Error returning browse list: NT_STATUS_ACCESS_DENIED
session request to 123.xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx failed (Call name not present)
session request to 123 failed (Called name not present)
Anonymous login successful
<same OS stuff as above>
Server Comment
<Listing of file servers>
*************************************

If need anything, just let me know.

Peace,
V

It does look as though you are haveing trouble logging into your
computers. You mentioned in the first post being able to specify the
server and share name. I added this functionality to smb-browser. apt-
get update && apt-get install smb-browser You can try that if you
would like.

LinuxNIT.
P.S. Is there a full-blown Domain Controller (PDC) on this network?
