All of us received a mail from Ms Soma Choudhury, flat no 103, Block 14. We normally do not bother all of you with such issues. But we are both appalled and alarmed by the tone and content of the mail and hence compelled to write to you.
We sincerely hope that we will not have reason to write on such issues to all of you in future as well.
We are appalled because EGV affairs are managed by a property manager & the builder in absence of an association. Any impropriety is taken up with the property manager for redressal. The security / eve-teasing issue as depicted by Ms. Soma has not been taken up with the property manager. There are many resident/owner who take up their pain area with EGV Cultural committee.
But that route has also been shunned. Instead it has been taken up with a much broader forum i.e. EGV Owners in their personal capacity.
We cannot fathom the reason behind it but find a similarity in recent spate of mails trying to do away the existence of EGV Cultural committee in particular and spreading rumours in general. Yes, we are referring to the recent mails written to all of you by Shri G.Choudhury, Flat 103, Block 14 AND Soma Choudhury is daughter of G.Choudhury, and by her own admission stays in Delhi.
We have reason to be alarmed. Some of the issues are being re-iterated for ease of reference vis-a-vis our observations:
- charges of eve teasing- should have complained to security/property manager
- fear of physical harm- inspite of pool side security 24x7; paranoid could be an inference
- most damaging a communal angle- extreme remark doesn’t warranty our response
- claims to represent the ladies of the condo but does not stay here- none of the women residents using the pool ever complained nor most of them know who Soma is
- Men sitting on the poolside ogling females in swimming pool- most of them are our wives/friends wives but none complained; Moreover, Ms Shoma could not recognise the faces of those sitting as it was dark. How come the bird watchers too ogle the target when the distance is long and area dark?
Now, coming back to the allegations in particular: We have gone through the records (register is maintained at swimming pool) to have a look at the charges of Ms Soma Choudhury.
- The swimming pool log book says G. Choudhury +1 entered the swimming pool on 06.06.2015 at 6.45 p.m. The timing has over writing marks and so is the signature.
- We simply wish to say that Ms Soma Choudhury had entered the pool without entering her details in the log book and is a gross violation of existing rules.
- We scanned through the security log book and it was clearly mentioned by the guard on duty that on 06.06.2015 Shri Choudhury was not wearing a swimming trunk and on pointing out the same, replied that he will enter the pool in that condition only and the security may complain to whoever and do whatever .
- It is a fact that we are getting complain that a few residents ( Shri G.Choudhury one among them) are entering the pool (as well as gym) without proper costumes and jeopardising the health of swimming pool users.
- We also enquired with Mrs Kumar and came to know that it is Shri Choudhury and not the guard who approached her when she was with other ladies practicing for the cultural programme of World Environment Day celebrated on 07.06.15. He was advised to check with security on his Bermuda rather than her.
This pool, like any other in the civilized world, does not have any demarcated area for male and female but users maintain a distance based on convenience.
We are aware of the difficulties people faces walking long after taking a dip or coming to pool taking shower and is being pursued with the builder for a solution.
Finally, You have been writing to us with your problems, thoughts, ideas and suggestions -we enjoy the same and welcome it.
Lets keep it healthy in the interest of all and EGV in general.

When I was about to touch water, a security guard stopped me pointing out the swimming dress I was wearing was not perfect and called another senior lady sitting separately to intervene. She observed me and said O.K. with the swimming dress. Later I came to know her name and she was one Mrs. Kumar. I would like to know why Security Guard on duty called Mrs. Kumar to verify my dress? Was she appointed by the Builders’ side to supervise the duties of the Security Guards? Sometimes back, two/three Muslim ladies also faced problems with the male security guards at the swimming pool.
In view of the above, two suggestions are forwarded for your taking prompt action before it is too late:
First : All the chairs must be removed from the Pool side so that no one can sit idle ogling at females’. But if allowed, it is nothing but encroaching upon the privacy and modesty of female members of EGV Complex.
Second : Immediately remove all male guards manning the ladies area and employ only female guards to interact with ladies before someone goes to police station for lodging a case of harassment.
Third : This is a crying need to build a makeshift dress changing room near the swimming pool. At present, ladies travel from the existing washing room to the Pool side with a swimming costume through the glare of a dozen male security guards and passersby, besides those people mentioned above to the Pool side.If there is a need to close down the swimming pool for a short time to get the above facilities in place, let us do that. Better to manage swimming pool professionally or be ready for ugly consequences. This is certainly avoidable.
We are ready to cooperate with you towards building EGV Complex as one of the best in Kolkata. I will be happy to see your respond through execution of your action towards right direction as I speak on behalf of all the lady residents of the complex and to avoid any untoward incident that hampers the peace and reputation of this place.
