Rhetoric and Truth in the Spanish Tragedy :
This is an article by Cinta Zunino Garrido from Universitat de Huelva studying Spanish tragedy in terms of descriptions of battles and how these decriptions are tightly connected to humanistic rhetorical tradition.According to Article Thomas Kyd was well aware of the effect of rhetoric while creating and literary text and used it by all means .He was affected by the Erasmus's thoughts on art of rhetoric.Erasmus basically states that The most appropriate way to enlarge and beautify a texy in terms of detailed description of incidents is by expanding text with its content and choice of words.By using colors of rhetoric Kyd's aim is to avoke pleasure by creating mental picture in the reader.It should be like as if the reader saw it not read it.His language ,his expressions ,detailed descriptions rhetorical language are some of the senecan elements whic are seen in Kyd's play.He visualizes everything in the eyes of audiences.one of the finest examples can be seen in the dialogue between the king and the general while the king demans description of the war between portugal and spain .General's answer to the king turns out to be one of the longest speeches in the play 67 lines ,he adorns his language by all kinds of figures of speech in other words with colors of rhetoric.He is conscious of the pleasure that he may cause in the king with his good news thats why he offers vivid portrayal of the scene .This kind of long narration can be seen throughout the play this is only one example of it .
 In the Spanish Tragedy audience gets up to six different versions of Don Andrea's death and struggle between Spain and Portugal.and of course an important question arises "to what extend can we rely on the descriptions offered in the play?.and the answer of the article by using quotations from different critics is that;

whether long narrations are reliable or not is not a matter of question because each person narrates story according to his own benefit .This conflict is caused by the break between language and the reality that it symbolises.The reliability of the facts in this play is unnecessary as the real purpose of the descriptions is the satisfaction of the hearers or the own benefit for the reporters .Language is a tool to create ,to narrate what is most interesting for the hearer.Language is not a mere vehicle of representation,it is what shapes the thought ,no matter how much this thought resembles reality .That is why we dont need to question reality of the reports of the battle in the play .All of them have a function .
