Q: Is the solution high coupled with Drupal CMS or is it possible to subscribe any kind of integration layer to work with other CMS's?

You can think of the solution as having three core components, the workflow engine, the publishing dashboard, and the hosting platform, which is Drupal. Drupal is very lightly coupled to the other parts of the system. Communication happens by API only, and you could straightforwardly replace Drupal. We are working on a new version of eLife that uses a vanilla PhP front end.
