Dear Colleagues and Friends,

Yesterday myself and Dr Mukhtar Nasir, Academic Secretary, attended the Royal College Diaspora Groups meeting representing SPA (UK&I) and , amongst other things, MTI was discussed.
MTI (Medical Training Initiative) as many of you might know is a program allowing overseas doctors to work in the UK for two years (paid jobs) for further training under the supervision of the relevant Royal College. It can be utilized either for gaining experience of working in General Psychiatry in the UK or in certain specialty e.g. Child Psychiatry, Old age, Forensic ......etc.
Over the last few years we worked hard, with our colleagues from other Diaspora groups, to persuade the Royal College of Psychiatrists to join the MTI scheme. Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons joined much earlier and a number of people from Sudan benefited from the program already.
The Royal College of Psychiatrists agreed last year to run a Pilot Program starting with a small number of trainees first. This was advertised last year, November 2013, and two trainees have started working in Leicester already and two more are starting soon. Interestingly, most of them were from Sri Lanka ! I must add here that the selection is made through rigorous criteria and interviews conducted by the Royal College itself and nobody else is involved in the process, including us.

The new round (MTI 2015) will start soon and the number this time will be unlimited and will depend on how many posts are available in the Trusts interested in the scheme. The following points are very important:

1) The new round will be advertised on the Royal College website in November 2014
2) The closing date for applications will be in January 2015
3) The interviews ( via Skype) will be held in February 2015
4) The posts will start in August 2015, in time with other Core Trainees.
5) The posts will be at CT3 (Core Trainee year Three), therefore the minimum requirements is 3 years of training in psychiatry. so it will suit R4 trainees in Sudan, or newly qualified Consultants.
6) English language test is required, so it might be a good idea for those interested to start preparing now for the notorious IELTS.

Those of us who work in the UK can help by contacting their Hospitals ,Trusts, and  Deaneries, to alert them of the scheme. I know there is  nationwide shortage of trainees across specialties so you might be able to help your trust to fill the vacant posts and, at the same time,  help our young colleagues in Sudan to be exposed to working and training in the UK. I will do the same in Birmingham.

Further information on the scheme, including Application Forms,, are available on RCPsyc website:

Good luck to those interested and please don't hesitate to contact me if you need further assistance or advice. my emails are:

I will post this message as wide as I can but please alert anyone who might benefit from it, in case they haven't seen it.

Stay well all of you and enjoy the rest of the weekend.

Mahmoud Bushra.

Thank you Mahmoud and congratulations on persuading the RCPsych to take on this initiative.

I know that other colleges are involved too and it will be extremely helpful if we from our end, contacted our related colleges and trusts to maximise our colleagues' chances

As you said, most of these posts in all other specialities have been filled so far by candidates from SE Asia and Nigeria!

The reasons are:
1/ the candidates are regularly checking out these initiatives
2/ Their diaspora colleagues actively pursuing them
3/ ability to score 7 and above in the ILETs and this has been our weakest point

BSAMS met with the British Council in Sudan to make them aware of these initiatives and agreed with them the following:

1/ Doctors who are keen to join the MTI schemes to contact them directly.
2/ they will make them sit a preliminary exam to assess their need to pass the ILETs
3/ they will organise an intensive course based on those needs to maximise their chances to score 7+

If you need more information please contact your association/society who are part of BSAMS. They are fully informed with this process and I am sure they will be able to assist you

Hope this helps and good luck to all

Good idea Yassein . As always you came up with forward thinking. Hope you will join us in Khartoum to take it further . Your contribution is always appreciated by all. Let's do what we can for our young colleagues in Sudan.

Excellent proactive initiative. I suggest to form a group from the young trainees in Sudan themselves ( Khartoum and Provinces) to nominate few of their colleagues and then forge  a formal relationship with the college to benefit from this program on a yearly basis . for that they need to join as associate members as a named group.
