Fikra for Studies and Development Sounds Alarm on Sudan's Looming Famine with New Report

[12 April 2024] Fikra for Studies and Development today announced the release of its critical report, "The Hunger’s Grip: The Looming Catastrophe of Famine in Sudan". This comprehensive study sheds light on the dire situation of food insecurity gripping Sudan following the eruption of the War in April last year, offering a stark analysis of the impending famine and proposing realistic, operational recommendations for all stakeholders to address the crisis.

The report offers a comprehensive analysis of the food insecurity situation in Sudan after the outbreak of the April 2023 War, focusing on the contributing factors that have formed its foundation. These comprise RSF starvation strategies, SAF bureaucratic obstacles, international community response deficiencies, agricultural failure, and the repercussions of the economic collapse. Additionally, it offers a comprehensive account of the heroic domestic response exemplified by the Emergency Response Rooms' (ERRs) efforts and its communal kitchens initiative

"The Hunger’s Grip" aims to serve as a clarion call to action, urging the international community to move beyond rhetoric and implement tangible solutions to alleviate the suffering of the Sudanese people. The report provides two sets of recommendations for effective intervention, general recommendations on the overall humanitarian situation and Food security specific recommendations. These recommendations which designed to be practical and achievable, emerged from the deliberations that transpired during the Sudan Humanitarian Crisis Conference, which was convened in Cairo in November 2023. First-line responders from emergency rooms, national experts and humanitarian specialists, and international community actors participated in these discussions. They establish a foundation for feasible interventions that remain viable for further development and implementation in order to tackle the situation, provided that there are receptive ears and political determination to do so.

Fikra for Studies and Development is especially honored to have "The Hunger’s Grip" fore-worded by Eddie Thomas, a long-standing Sudan watcher and expert. Thomas's invaluable insights and deep understanding of the Sudanese context lend significant weight to the report's findings and recommendations.

Fikra for Studies and Development urges all stakeholders to take immediate action to avert the consequences of the looming famine in Sudan. The time for rhetoric has passed; the need for action is paramount.
