Prospective students interested in the MS or PhD programs of the Department of Earth and Environmental Sciences (EARTH) must apply to the Rackham Graduate School for admission in the following fall term. For U-M undergraduate students who are currently pursuing an EARTH major, we also offer a fifth-year MS program. These students must discuss their applications first with the Associate Chair for Curriculum.

An important part of planning is identifying research directions and potential faculty advisers. See Research and People to explore the research interests of our faculty, research scientists, postdocs, and students. Send an e-mail in early September to each of the faculty with whom you are interested in working. To prepare a compelling application, see "Tips for prospective students before applying" below.

Applicants must request on the TOEFL web site that their scores be sent to the University of Michigan using the code 1839. The department code is not necessary, since TOEFL scores are automatically added to applicant records as long as name and birth date can be matched. The scores will be automatically included in the application. Official downloaded TOEFL scores are required. Photocopies are not acceptable. The applicant must pay for the exam and make sure that the results are sent. See the Rackham Admissions Test Page for more information about English tests.

The uploaded transcript is sufficient for our faculty to review the application. If the applicant has been recommended for admission, he or she will receive an email from the Rackham Graduate School Admissions Office requesting an official transcript. See the Instructions for Submitting Transcripts on Rackham's website. To connect it to the application, the applicant should send the Academic Records/Transcript Submission Form with the official transcript and include the University of Michigan ID number. See also Required Academic Credentials from Non-U.S. Institutions.

We do not distinguish between international and domestic students. However we acknowledge the difficulties in comparing coursework and course grades from international institutions to schools in the US and cultural differences in recommendation letters. The Admission Committee has members from different sub-disciplines in the earth and environmental sciences including international scholars. They share their insights and experiences and use feedback on the applicants from all faculty members to assure a fair and rigorous evaluation process.

The Department of Earth System Science offers a PhD program in a wide range of fields, including water resources; ocean circulation; land use change; sustainable food and water practices; climate, tectonics, and landscape evolution; ocean biogeochemistry; climate and earth system dynamics; soil and environmental biogeochemistry; molecular microbial ecology; and, geostatistics. The size and the breadth of interest of the department's faculty provide numerous opportunities for field-based research as well as laboratory and numerical experiments. We apply the most modern applications of instrumental analysis and spectroscopy to problems in the Earth sciences.

Read through the instructions and begin your electronic application on the Stanford Graduate Admissions website. When prompted to select the program to which you are applying, select "Earth System Science PhD" or "Earth System Science MS". Before you apply to our MS degree, be sure to check with your potential faculty advisor to determine whether they accept terminal MS students, since many do not. Please check the admissions FAQ page for more information

The Supplemental Information is part of the online application. You will be asked to identify up to three faculty members with whom you want to work and why. You can simply write N/A if you have less than four names in mind.

GRE - The general GRE test is optional. After communicating with your potential advisor, if you think that submitting GRE scores will help your case for admission, then feel free to do so. If submitted, scores must be from tests taken within the past five years, and must be reported directly to Stanford from ETS. The Stanford score recipient number is 4704. To facilitate preliminary review of your application, please provide your scores in the electronic form if you plan to submit them. If you have previously applied to Stanford (within the past five years), we have your prior test scores. We do not have a minimum GRE score requirement, and we do not track average scores for admitted applicants.

Following the instructions in the electronic application system, arrange for your three letters of recommendation to be submitted electronically. It is required by the University that at least one of the recommenders be a faculty member at the last school you attended as a full-time student unless you have been out of school for more than five years. Letters of recommendation that can speak first-hand about your research training and course preparation will be most helpful. Substitutions for faculty recommendations may include work associates or others who can comment on your potential for graduate work. All letters of recommendation must be received by the application deadline. Applicants are responsible for notifying references of the deadline.

Application Fee Waiver -- Waiver deadline is 10-15 days before the application deadline, depending on the type of waiver. Please use this link for more information on the Stanford Doerr School of Sustainability fee wavier.

Due to the high volume of applications, we cannot respond to individual inquiries about the status of an application or of documents submitted. We will accept letters of recommendation and official test scores after the deadline. The office will be closed from December 21, 2023 - January 3, 2024. Decisions will be made on all applications by the end of March.

ICFS (International Communications Filing System) is IB's new consolidated licensing database. Earth Stations, Space Stations, International Section 214, International Public Fixed, and International HF Broadcasting services are all included within ICFS. ICFS now supports public access via the World Wide Web. This allows applicants to file many applications electronically and to check on the status of their application via a WWW browser.

Sample earth station application forms using FCC Form 312 have been prepared for several types of typical earth station applications. These completed application forms may be used as a guide to the preparation of your actual Form 312 application for an earth station authorization. Sample FCC Form 312 applications are available in Adobe Acrobat PDF format for the following types of earth station applications.

If you have questions, contact eps-adm...@stanford.edu. More university information and application system questions can be found on Stanford's Graduate Admissions website and the online application.

The Statement of Purpose in a graduate application should provide specifics regarding the scientific questions and research topics you would like to pursue. As such, the statement is more like a research proposal than a general personal narrative. Details of your personal background and education can then strengthen your proposal as part of explaining your research focus and why you feel you are in a good position to attack the scientific questions that interest you.

In addition to the standard application materials, e.g., statement of purpose, letters of recommendation and GPA etc., the Earth and Planetary Sciences graduate program requires a supplement to assess your academic achievement and potential. All applicants are required to answer the supplemental questions in the online application. A reference to the supplemental questions can be found on the Admissions FAQ page.

Only Official transcripts need to be uploaded to the application at this time. Upon acceptance, you will need to arrange for your official transcripts to be sent by the institution(s) to Stanford University in Spring. Please refrain from sending official transcripts until requested by Graduate Admissions or the EPS department.
