(repost from Mark)
I called this company last week to see if they conducted tours. They
said they would by appointment for a group, and I'm checking to see if
there's any interest.

I mentioned to them that one of the things we did was to serve
businesses by connecting them with qualified techs, and the lady I spoke
to agreed that they should talk to us.

Beyond that, this place is on the east side of town, and it's like
having an auto plant here - she confirmed that they build the sweepers
from scratch at this location.

I'm up for just seeing the manufacturing operations and factory tech,
and we might get a few nibbles on the work front. Please let me know if you'd like to go. She said mid-late January would
be good for them.

I worked there many moons ago. There machine shop is breathtaking. I would be interested in going on a tour if one were set up.

Sounds like fun.
I worked for GM many, many moons ago, and spent a bit of time in Buick
and Oldsmobile factories.

A different world.

This is a nice and very bold step.  I think it important that we finish our spreadsheet or database of skill and services offered by members so that we are not embarassed  by not being able to show what we can offer to a prospect or answer a specific questions in a very timely fashion.

Thanks for the effort.  Good show.

So does that mean you don't want to go on the tour Don?

I think it's important to create the database too and don't know why anyone should feel embarrassed because we don't have one. We've been her for 2 years without one and it doesn't happen over night. That shouldn't stop people from doing cool things or working on other projects. Not to go off topic, but are you going to be at the member directory hackathon to make this happen?

I do not think I said I did not want to participate in any events you mention.  I support them. I merely want us to focus on being able to tell any potential customer what people can deliver the services they inquire about.

There is nothing negative about that.

Hope that sets the record straight.

Great. I replied to the plant manager's email already, and I'm supposed
to call him next week to set up something for mid-late January.

Here are other database possibilities. OrangeCRM looks really nice. I
logged into the demo site and it tracks vacancies and recruits.

Wow.. I like that... I did mention maybe using a CRM type system. I mean we have over 250 members now, so we do need something robust and easy to use.

Yeah, pretty cool, but with a big asterisk: They use the same
free-core, proprietary add-ons model that SugarCRM uses.

That's ok if the free edition handles all of your needs and places no
onerous restrictions.

It's written in php and runs on linux, we just need the A and the M. Do I hear a case for the use of Mark's server rack?

Can do. Dean's note on the Sugar model bothers me, though. I looked at
the site and saw the GPL license page, but I didn't see the proprietary add-on
stuff.
Where are you seeing this? I don't know if that's a deal-killer (we
might need only basic functionality at this point, and we can write our
own add-ons), but I'd sure like to know more about it.

I may be out of date on that.
Looks like they're pushing their SAAS stuff for the paid side now...
Which still leaves me wanting to be sure that the things we need are
in the free edition.

I downloaded it and we'll take a look. It downloads from Source Forge,
but they force you to provide a name (I used Registration Mandatory?) and
email address. I don't know if that violates the GPL or not, but it's
unusual. Makes me think your instincts are right. I'll keep you posted.

sample data at this point.

Don't forget about networking skills and certifications, hardware skills & certs, mobile technology, robotics, it audit, and the list can go on and on. Listing certs would be a good thing.

The system should have user access levels as well. I'm thinking, public, member, paid public, paid member, and admin.

Michael is correct.  But most importantly list the five skills that you hope companies will buy first in terms that they can understand the value they will get. I have something like 16 certifications.  Can't remember the last time I used my EVA skills .... a metric system to determine value during and after a project.

What can be helpful is to add a category of Expertise in those Skills (Beginner to Advanced).  I know talking to FutureLink last week, they said such a database would help with specific proprietary programming needs for their clients.

I think skill level is important, too. Even knowing a little of
something, combined with a stronger skill can make someone very valuable.
I also think that we need to constantly update the skill table - there are
new languages/hardware platforms/.../... coming out constantly, and I
think every new keyword needs to be added.

I had a meeting this morning with the Mayor and local manufactures in Elgin.  The president of one of the companies said it would be helpful if ETC could connect them to workers skilled in technologies used in manufacturing, such as CAD, 3D printers, Graphic Design, Industrial Design, etc.    Something to think about to help other local companies link to local talent.

You can edit a skill list. Not the greatest interface but it should
be a one time setup.

Employees can have skills and years experience added.

You can make a custom report to list skills, but I don't see any
output besides HTML, so we'd be page-scraping or directly querying the
database to get anything out.

So the basic editing side is there, amidst a bunch of other stuff we won't use.

Meanwhile I'll get it back up and make sure it's ready as soon as we've
