Hi All,

There's a .com domain name I'd like for a project I'm developing (it's a made-up word).  This domain name is currently registered by a small general-purpose web design/hosting services provider based in Minnesota.  There is no content sitting on this domain, any requests are just forwarded to this company's general site homepage.  The registration expires July 13, 2013.

What would you do?  Inquire with the registrant about a sale or transfer before the expiration?  Or wait and see if they abandon it on their own (after July 13) and if not, then consider whether to approach them ...

I suppose the strongest motivation for them to renew this dormant domain is ... finding out that somebody else wants it!

You would do well to first, verify that any mail that might go to you from their old site address would not be embarassing to your company's protocols.  (2) See if you can get them to send you an unrevocable release of the site.  And then either register this name on Sun. or Mon. as yours and pay a fee to your hosting company and perhaps the old owner.  OR pick a similar, unused domain name and register that.

You should NOT contact them until 45 days after the expiration date.

Do you know who the registrar is?
Some hold on to it for 60 days.

The thing is, and this has happened me and to clients all the time. If you call them or email them then they KNOW you want it.

If they renew, then you'll have to contact them.  Question is... is it worth $1,000 for you to get this domain?

I think GoDaddy offers an backorder a domain feature... however, I don't recommend GoDaddy as a registrar and I think that service is like $60.

Thanks, Michael.

1. No it's not worth that money.  I can easily make up a different word for the cost of a couple of beers.

2. The registrar is Public Domain Registry (.com) which is a kind of "wholesale" registrar to customer-facing resellers like the outfit I described.  So all the forwarding, locking, private registration, and auto-renewal, etc. (I assume) is handled by the reseller's own little control panel system that they offer to their domain/hosting customers.

I totally expect it to be auto-renewed for a year or two.  But maybe they'll part with the .net domain (which they also squatted on).

I once acquired another domain from Name Scout (.ca) in a post-expiration instant auction, and it did cost about $55 (there were no other bidders).
