I had a browse at
http://www.smashingmagazine.com/2011/04/11/taking-credit-card-payments-online-whats-involved/
that Cash suggested.

In general the current agenda for this Elgg Plugin Repository Group
kinda excludes Payment Gateways.
Our main focus right now is how to start, promote and maintain such a
commercial and also Elgg-supportive forum where commerce and freely
offered advice, plugins, themes, merhandise may be offered to the
general Elgg public - without in any way 'competing' with Elgg.Org,
but rather as an unofficial adjunct to the global promotion for the
Elgg social networking platform.

Payment Gateways of all types will almost always have their little
problems in the exchange of $$, country restrictions and other snarls.
Not too long ago - India was having similar problems that Rudolfo
mentioned. I was trying to send some $$ to India to pay for services,
but PayPal just was not doing it's act and the money never was made
available to the recipient ;-(

Even if the NewRepo were to install a payment gateway to enable
'easier' payments for vendors/ developers - if El Salvador is out of
bounds via PayPal - Rudolfo's SocialWeb will still not be able to have
access to the $ ;-( square one all over again. You guys should
investigate other methods of getting payments sent to your country.
e.g. Western Union does pretty much handle almost all countries check
them out.

The aspects implied by a built-in payment gateway for the NewRepo will
mean a more formalized market-place for the kinds of merchandise we
want to target. Such software development will take effort and we dot
not all always have the time resource available to get this going in a
hurry.

The group has been quiet for a couple of days...

Re: Payment Gateways
It's a little strange that the people insisting on having a payment
gateway are the ones that can not benefit from it due to financial
restrictions...
I personally do not think that we are looking at full-blown market
place at this stage. What we need is a 'consortium' or a space where
we can advertise our plugins and paid services, since we can not do it
on elgg.org. It seems that each one of us can benefit from a shared
space where we can freely post extended information about what we do -
for that matter even a wordpress install would suffice.
On another note, have people in India and El Salvador consider sms
payment gateways?

Re: Course of action
My thinking is we need to move in the way of the least resistance.
Let's be clear that all of us have agendas - either personal, local or
global. So, this needs to be something that benefits us all in a non-
preferential way. Payment Gateways and extra features are of benefit
to some and of disadvantage to others. My suggestion is we start by
having a very simple system, where we could start aggregating content/
plugins.
One way to proceed is by using Elgg Repo, which is in the trunk. We
could provide a set of different licenses, allow for free (GPL or
other) plugins to be hosted on the site, and the paid plugins
directing to the download page.
