Adobe Digital Editions (abbreviated ADE) is an e-book reader software program from Adobe Systems, built initially (1.x version) using Adobe Flash. It is used for acquiring, managing, and reading e-books, digital newspapers, and other digital publications. The software supports EPUB and PDF (nonproprietary file format for reflowable text, or fixed layout e-books; respectively). It implements a proprietary scheme of digital rights management (DRM) which, since the version 1.5 release in May 2008, allows document sharing among multiple devices and user authentication via an Adobe ID. Digital Editions is a successor to the Acrobat eBook Reader application.[1]

Windows and Mac OS X versions of Adobe Digital Editions were released on 19 June 2007. The current Apple iOS version of the app has a one star and two star rating. Previous versions of the software required version 9.0 of Adobe Flash Player. Starting with version 2.0, however, which relies on .NET Framework 3.5 on Windows, Flash Player is no longer supported. Adobe initiated development of a Linux version of ADE in 2007; however, this has not had any beta release or any formal updates.[2]

Adobe Digital Editions uses the proprietary ADEPT (Adobe Digital Experience Protection Technology) digital rights management scheme,[3] which is also implemented on some e-book readers, including iPads and many Android devices, but not Kindles.[4] The software locks content to up to six machines and allows the user to view the content on each of them. Barnes & Noble (B&N) e-books are protected with a variant of ADEPT.[citation needed]

When viewing an e-book, Adobe Digital Editions by default stores the e-book locally as PDF files on Windows machines.These files can be copied and handled like other files, but they cannot be opened except with Adobe Digital Editions. Adobe's website has virtually no information on ADEPT except on its trademark page and a statement that OverDrive is compatible.[6]

You need an eReader software installed on your computer to read an eBook. The most commonly used eReader software for PC and MAC is Adobe Digital Editions. This reader is used when you have an eBook in the .ePub file format.

DRM is the technology used to protect copyrighted material. It controls how a resource is accessed and used, including the borrowing time, the number of users, and the number of devices used for accessing the content. Further limitations include the copy/print allowances for each individual resource and the prevention of modifications being made to the content.

To access and download eBooks, search via Omni ,or, check the Databases: EBook Collections page. Alternatively, many of our subscribed eBooks can also be discovered through our Featured Collections page, with new titles being added regularly to the featured categories.

Note: We may not have access to all e-resource material within a given database. Most database subscriptions vary over time, with new titles being added or others removed from the collection.

Most databases include and "onscreen" reader (read within the browser screen), which provides various accessibility options (e.g. increase font size, font styles, contrast etc.) It is recommended to check for these settings and others in the Help menu. For the most part, eBooks issued as EPUB files offer increased options in how text and images can be viewed compared to their alternative PDF versions. Most vendors however, continue to make improvements in this area and recognize the importance of offering accessibility to all.

When you select an eBook to download, follow the onscreen prompts. Once the download is complete, it should automatically detect Adobe Digital Editions and the cover of the title should appear within the main Library screen of the software (providing everything has been registered and authorized correctly)

Note: * ACSM stands for Adobe Content Server Manager. A file ending with this extension, is not the actual eBook file, but a license file that manages the download of the eBook. It is compatible with Adobe Digital Editions and the equivalent software, Bluefire Reader.

Once the download is complete, the eBook will appear in the Library screen of Adobe Digital Editions. The book cover provides information on the remaining loan period status of the borrowed item. When the borrowing period is over, the title will no longer be available for reading on your device. You also have the option to return the title before the loan period has ended.

Further details on using the Adobe Digital Editions app, can be found by reading "Getting Started with Adobe Digital Editions" which is included within the app Library screen.

This is to ensure that you are the individual borrowing the ebooks and the user of the devices with Adobe Digital Editions installed. The Adobe ID is used to verify this information. Any ebooks that you borrow will be associated with that single Adobe ID account whether you use it on one device or up to six in total.

It varies. Usually it is the publisher who determines borrowing times. When you download the eBook, you will be provided with the return date. Within Adobe Digital Editions, click File > Item Info to see the due back date and other restrictions in copying and printing. You do have the option to return the eBook before the borrowing date expires. Right-click on the eBook cover and choose Return Borrowed Item.

Those who know me know that I am a huge Halo fan. Recently, I finished reading Halo: Broken Circle and decided to move on to the latest release, Halo: New Blood. I already knew that Halo: New Blood isn't currently available as a paperback as, for some reason, it was decided that it would be a "digital-first short novel", so I went looking for the eBook. This is the story of my painful quest.

So, I selected "DOWNLOAD" and anticipated a file called something like "Halo - New Blood.epub" to start downloading. Instead, I saw "URLLink.acsm". Now, I consider myself to be pretty au fait when it comes to file extensions and formats and I had never heard of an ACSM file. Google quickly revealed that it is the American College of Sports Medicine but, after tweaking my search, revealed that it is actually an Adobe Digital Editions file used for downloading eBooks.
