Hello Everyone,

Me again, this time with a question which might seem a bit strange. I'm not a clojure developer (but I'm getting one because of all the code in EDB and Cascalog) and I found it difficult to get even the smallest possible setup of EDB working. Given the fact that Clojure isn't that widespread in organizations, I am playing with the idea to try and port the whole sourcebase to java. Are there any reasons why that would be a stupid idea? Ok, I know the code is there, just not in Java. Is there anyone willing to help?

Best Regards,

Daan

I'd wait for Nathan or Sam to chime in with the final word, but there is certainly no reason that you couldn't fork the repo and port it all to Java. However, I don't think the official repo will ever abandon the clojure code. In that case, you'd have to maintain your own fork and add future updates and features yourself.

Hey Soren,

Thanks for the quick answer. I have to say, managing the java code on my own is a bit of a drawback since we are only planning to use EDB in production. But I will take it into consideration if NAthan and Sam give the go. Anyway, I think for EDB to be used more it would help to have a working version in one single place. Currently I use the yieldbot fork since it was the only one I could get working, however with the knowledge I got from playing with the YieldBot one, I should be able to get the main one running as well.

Any plans of merging everything together again? I'm looking forward playing with your leveldb persistance implementation ;)

Daan,

Glad you were able to get running with my fork. I do indeed intend to merge my fork back into the master repo. Hopefully that will happen soon. I'm running the leveldb persistence in production with good results so far.

Best,
Soren

Hi Daan,

I'm not a fan of moving EDB from Clojure to Java (I find it easier to understand because of Clojure), but I would be interested in working together to get EDB running in production comfortably. I saw that you are from Belgium, I am based in Amsterdam, so maybe we could meet somewhere and talk about EDB and related technologies?

Cool! I would very much like to get together.

I wouldn't like to port it either, but since clojure isn't very much supported in companies (and I have to admit I find it rather difficult to learn) I wanted to give it a try. We should certainly do something to the amount of error logging since you can spend ages trying to find what went wrong ;)

Anyway, Call a time and place, and I'll try to get there.

Maybe another wild idea, why not convert EDB to Yarn?
