Some of the 2022 and 2023 past papers are labelled 'modified'. This means SQA made changes to the question paper in response to the disruption caused by the Covid-19 pandemic, as part of our modifications to assessment in National Courses. For example, a modified past paper may be shorter, have fewer marks or contain fewer topics than past papers from previous years.

Specimen question papers are available for National 5, Higher and Advanced Higher qualifications. These show what a question paper looks like - how it is structured and the types of questions it contains. They also include marking instructions. Find them under 'Past Papers and Marking Instructions' on our NQ subject pages.

The information in a past paper may be reproduced in support of SQA qualifications only on a non-commercial basis. If it is reproduced, SQA must be clearly acknowledged as the source. If it is to be reproduced for any other purpose, written permission must be obtained from permi...@sqa.org.uk

Where a past paper includes material for which SQA does not own the copyright, this material can only be reproduced on a non-commercial basis for the purposes of instruction in an educational establishment. If it is to be reproduced for any other purpose, it is the user's responsibility to obtain the necessary copyright clearance from the copyright owner. The acknowledgements page in a past paper lists the owners of copyright items that are not owned by SQA.

Like many new Salesforce Admins, I found myself mesmerized by the trailhead tutorials, badges and super-badges. However, it takes more than a few badges and super-badges to show expertise. That is where the certification comes in, and that required another test...the one thing that keeps me from ever wanting to re-live my college years again.

In college, I majored in Marketing. I chose that major for a variety of reasons; one of them being the fact that my classes would grade me more on essays and projects over tests. Yes! I was that one guy who gladly opted for an all-nighter writing a ten page paper over how the color red has a big effect on the food industry over, God forbid, another two page multiple choice test.

Yet, whether I liked it or not, this was now my new reality. I had another test before me that I had to clear before I advance to the next step. Spoiler alert: I passed and now, have my Salesforce Admin Certification. Now, this could be your future, too, even if you have crippling test anxiety or the issue of overthinking questions, just like I did. Here is a guide for you.

Attached above is the PDF for the study guide. The way it works is there are a range of topics that are covered. Some range higher in the percentage of the exam than others. But make no mistake, they are all connected. Make sure you know the value of the guide and keep it with you, every time you study, moving forward.

Like everything else, this requires time. That is obvious. What is not so obvious is where you want to allocate your time and resources to get the score you need. Remember, the study guide shows weightage, but how you shall allocate your time is up to you. So here is how you achieve the most efficiency, when prepping for your exam.

Start by taking a practice exam. You can find one on Salesforce Ben. I, personally, was not a fan of it. Another option is paying $20 for Focus on Force, where you get six practice tests along with the breakdown of how you did in each section. For the record, I am not sponsored by them. However, I can attest that it is helpful...if you use them properly.

If you saw the classic film, Mean Girls, you learned that the limit does not exist. However, in Salesforce, and every program, there is ALWAYS a limit. Now, your brilliance as a Salesforce Admin comes with how you can work around those limits. However, you cannot really work around the limits unless you know what they are. Your job, when prepping for the exam is to learn the limits of every aspect After all, it is the most basic level of understanding and navigating the Salesforce ecosystem.

Here's how you keep your thoughts and information organized. Remember, even your brain has a limit in terms of how much it can memorize. So start by creating a spread sheet where you list out the terms and aspects of Salesforce that you need to learn. Now, create a section for function. For example, if you are learning about Workflow, the function would be to automate workflow. Now, you list out the limitations of the program. This spreadsheet will be the best thing you can remember.

This one is especially important if you have major test anxiety. Take as many practice tests as you can. Focus on Force is helpful, as it tends to be harder than the actual test. Now, getting comfortable with the Salesforce Admin testing format was my biggest challenge. If you look on the internet, you'll see yourself finding varying opinions on whether one should study "old tests" online or not. Some say it's all purely based on experience. Others say the tests alone are enough. Here is what really works:

There's a middle ground in everything. However, before you start studying old tests, you must first get the hands on experience where you actually practice all concepts on the test. It is one thing to theoretically know that an Escalation Rule will escalate cases based on criteria. It is another thing to have tried it out, yourself, and see how it functions. That can be done, for free, using a developer org. Simply type in developer.salesforce.com and create an account. After that, start playing around. Once you get a grip on everything, it becomes easy because you have both mental and muscle memory aiding you now. Once that is taken care off, then comes the practice tests.

Now, it is true. You need practical knowledge to better understand and succeed on the test. However, wordiness will be an issue, if you do not prepare accordingly. Anyone with test anxiety knows how detrimental that is to one's performance, regardless of how knowledgeable and skilled one is in this subject. So looking over old tests and practicing are incredibly helpful. Most of them can be found on quizlet, along with practicing Focus on Force. These will help train your mind to think in terms of the exam, after you built the foundation of your skills through practice on the developer org. Remember, you need both to ace this test. So for that, I recommend having a healthy mix. Use the practice questions to inform your judgement and keep getting practice. Eventually you will be ready to take the test. But, if you fail, fear not. I have a strategy for that.

So now, you are ready to take your test. You feel like you know everything there is to be thrown at you. You walk into the testing center. You do all your breathing exercises. You take your test and you see the dreaded words...You failed.

First of all, fear not. It happens to the best of us. A friend of mine once said "If it were that easy, everyone would do it and it would have no value." I would say it is very true for the Salesforce Admin Certification as well. Some people get it right away. Some, like myself, take longer. In fact, I'd argue and say the latter is more advantaged in the long run. If you take the exam multiple times, you get more practice understanding the Salesforce Ecosystem and that is the ultimate goal.

Now, take the time to calculate your overall score. When you take your test, they provide how much you scored on each section. So, it is essential to learn how to calculate your score, if you failed. That way, you know how far you actually are from passing. This is how you do that:

If you made it this far, it means you passed you test and are officially certified. So Congratulations!! Whether it is your first attempt or your one-hundredth attempt, you are a step forward and that's what matters. Now, it's time to keep growing in your journey and keep learning to become the best version of yourself.
