The circle in the diagrams is supposed to mirror the circle in the earlier diagram: it's the model. Outside the circle is the environment, the red line is where the "reasoning" is happening, and the dashed line is the dual of that reasoning which is being ignored. As you said, though, I'm not sure it's saying anything that's not much clearer in prose.

Well, if they don't help the people who get them, and confuse everyone else, they're not really doing much.
