Greetings from St. Pete/Tampa:

If you're ResourceShelf regulars, you know we are big fans of mapping
tools and geographic resources in general. Well, we have a nifty tool
for you as the Resource of the Week. In a nutshell, what it does is
take a whole bunch of addresses and automagically plot them for you
using Google Maps (or Yahoo! Maps, if that's your preference).
Simple, elegant. Useful if, say, you're house-hunting...or maybe if
you're running for office and want to get a quick geographic snapshot
of where your donors/supporters are concentrated.

Read all about it and give it a try.

And we'll see you next week.

Resource of the Week - BatchGeo By Shirl Kennedy, Senior Editor

Direct link to this post online: <http://digbig.com/5bbnya>

Someone showed me this free batch geocoding tool recently. Very
impressive; it's simple to use and can be a ginormous time saver.

Have you ever found yourself with a list of addresses that you had to
map? Doing them one by one, with Google Maps, isn't really that
difficult, but it can be tedious as heck. And the more addresses you
have, the more tedious it gets, right? Next time, give BatchGeo a try.

Say you're looking for a house or an apartment, and you've got a list
of places you want to see. Enter the list of addresses into a
spreadsheet; you can use a standard application like Excel, Numbers,
Google Docs, Open Office Calc, or you can use BatchGeo's downloadable
template (though you may not need all the info included there). The
more precise your addresses - i.e., including the zip codes - the
better your results will be. When you're done, highlight all the
spreadsheet data and copy it. Head over to BatchGeo.com, click in the
source data field, then paste your spreadsheet data.

At this point, if you want to check your data or set additional
options, click the Validate & Set Options button. Options include
setting the default map view, calculating location distances, etc. But
if you're reasonably sure your address data is correct, you can just
go ahead and click the Map Now button (or the Run Geocoder button
further down the page). The tool works pretty fast; your map will
appear below, along with the geocoding results, which you can
copy/paste or import back into a spreadsheet. As for the map itself,
you can save, print, share it...or even host it on your website, without
having to mess with the Google Maps API. (And if you don't like Google
Maps, BatchGeo also works with Yahoo! Maps.)

Reverse geocoding is also available; you input a bunch of latitude and
longitude coordinates, and BatchGeo will map them for you AND retrieve
the address data.

You can jump right into BatchGeo and play around with it, or watch the
video tutorials which show you how to make a map, how to make a store
locator, and how to edit a map. And note that this tool is not U.S.-
centric. The website says:

Geocode addresses in North America, South America, Europe, Asia,
and Oceania. Bulk geocode for most Countries including the UK,
France, Germany, Australia, Denmark, Belgium, Switzerland,
Portugal, New Zealand, Singapore, Russia, Philippines, Malaysia,
Ireland, Brazil, China, Sweden, Spain, Netherlands, Mexico, Japan,
and Italy.

If you love BatchGeo and think you'll use it regularly, donations to
the developer are encouraged. Just click the PayPal button.
