A must-have for better audio recording

Worked perfectly for allowing me to connect standard microphones to my Sony HD video camera. The ability to attach to the camera with the tripod screw, and still be mountable to a tripod, is genius. This unit offers the user a ton of control over the audio signal. Highly-recommended for any amateur videographer wanting to use high-quality microphones.

Expensive but worth it if you want pro audio to your camcorder.

I searched for weeks looking for something suitable to adapt either the output of my audio mixer board or the output of a stereo mic to my Sony NEX VG30 camcorder because the camcorder comes equipped with only a MIC level input. This unit solves the problem and now I can get either XLR MIC level inputs into the camcorder (such as from the MXL 990 Large Diaphragm Stereo Condenser Mic) or LINE level XLR inputs from the mixer output (such as from a Behringer x1622usb) into the camcorder. The gain controls on the box have about 20 detents (I didn't count) and I found that to be an extra added bonus because without them, the gaiin controls would tend to "slip" and you don't want that during a recording session!
If you are going to use this with the VG30 camcorder, you will need to get a Manfrotto 3433PL 577 Rapid Connect Adapter with Sliding Mounting Plate or equivalent to use as a spacer.

Works very well with my Sony Handycam

Attached this to a Sony Handcam that I use weekly for on-location shooting. Works very well with the shotgun mic that I have attached. I've also hooked it up to a mixing console for certain feeds and it handles it well.
For fixed, indoor shoots, I ended up creating my own power supply for it (since it only supports battery power. I went to Radio Shack and bought a 9V wall power supply, stripped the end off to bare wire, then wrapped it around the bottom end of an old 9V battery (held in place with electrical tape). This allows me to put the 9V battery into the battery holder at the front of the unit, backwards (with the posts away from the units battery contacts) but the bare wire of the 9V power supply makes contact with the battery terminals in the unit. Plug in the power supply and we're good to go. Saves on batteries for fixed tripod shoots with a power cord available.
I also ended up purchasing several 1-foot 1/8" to 1/8" cables to replace the
little coiled wire cable to hook up the mic line feed to the camcorder. Nothing was wrong with the one provided; just lost it between shoots. Recommend having a few extras because it is useless without that cable.
