The important thing to understand is that the SMBS0 provides CONTROL voltage -- which is NOT the 240V AC. A typical relay uses small volts, 5-24 typically, to activate the relay. Then, the metal contacts that are closed do the hard work. Not unlike a house lightswitch, where our feeble fingers flip the switch and the magic happens.
Dacian has suggested solid state, a really nice alternative. But similarly, the control is well within the SBMSO even though the AC would do all sorts of damage.
