While the desire to know the cost of installation in your garage is understandable, it is not possible to quote without knowing details of your particular job.

A similar project in one home could take much more or less time than in another. There are many things making it faster, easier and cheaper to do and vice versa.

To name just a few.

- Wire fishing behind drywall in one house would take up to 50 fold more time than running the same wire in the unfinished basement of another.

- Running a cable across and through the joists takes up to 10 fold longer than along or parallel to.

- Age of the house. The older is the house, the more time, effort and money is needed to do the identical job.

- The same goes for a nicely finished basement of the new house.

- Hoarder house or working area full of furniture and stuff. Limited, hard or no access.

- Panel with no spare spaces for two more breakers or an overloaded main panel that can not take a substantial additional load, requiring a service and panel upgrade first. &

An experienced electrician, the one who knows his stuff, should ask you about the purpose, or Amps, or appliance/device current rating. Why? Because NEMA 14-50R can be used for 120/240V, 40 Amp circuit with 8/3 cable and two pole 240V, 40 Amp breaker (electric range is an example). And it can be used for 50 Amp circuit with 6/3 wires and two pole 240 V, 60 Amp breaker. 60 Amp breaker is used because 50 Amp breakers of certain brands do not exist in Canada. But again, you can not use 60 Amp rated appliance, device, or load with the NEMA 14-50R.

If a contractor you are talking to is not asking about the current rating of the device to plug in or use with the NEMA 14-50R, hang up and call another one.

Be prepared to pay for NEMA 14-50 from $400 if your panel with plenty of spare capacity is in the garage to $1500 if it is not. Service and panel upgrade is not included.

If you car is configured with an on-board Dual Chargers and requires a Wall Connector with a 100 amp circuit breaker for fastest charging, the installation will cost from $700 if your 200 Amp panel with plenty of spare capacity is in the garage to $6000 if it is not. Cost of service and panel upgrade if required is not included.
