Here is an idea:
As presented – the Chevrolet Volt (and the Cadillac ELR) promote – when the electricity in the battery runs out, the Gas Engine driven Generator keeps you going!
The ELR website - http://www.cadillac.com/elr-electric-hybrid.html describes 4 modes of driving – with the “Hold Mode — Puts the battery’s charge on hold—saving it for later.”
The Volt Website - http://www.chevrolet.com/volt-electric-car.html says Gas is Optional! Then says “When the gas-powered generator kicks in, producing electricity to power the engine, the range of Volt extends to an EPA-estimated 380 miles with a full charge and a full tank of gas.”
Volt FAQ section says "Volt is designed to travel longer distances and at all speeds (up to 100 mph on a test track) in EV mode. Once the battery is depleted, Volt uses the gas-powered, range-extending generator to drive hundreds of miles more."
So – what about – the other idea: What if?
What if you run out of gas?
What if you missed that last gas station, and were running
on Hold Mode, and had a high state of charge in your battery, but ran out of
gas:
Could your drive it on Electric Power to get
to a Gas Station at that point?
What if – everyone that opens this email asks their Chevy or Cadillac Dealer this question?
If my Volt/ELR runs out of Gas, can I still drive it on Battery Power as far as it will go on that mode, if I want to go as far as the gas tank will take me, but have a back up to get me to a gas station when the tank runs dry?
If it does not currently – maybe we could influence them to add an ‘Emergency EV’ or ‘Reserve EV’ Mode!
Currently – the Volt Video says – “See How Volt makes the Most of Electricity and Gas” I think this question needs to be solved, in a positive way – to validate that premise!
