listening to all sorts at the mo - listen to donal dineen whenever
possible, but mainly podcasts - . links below (subscription is
free) ...
tim sweeneys show beats in space, hosts a 2 hour show once a week from
new york. has different guest producers and djs in each week to play
for half the show, so there's a good mix of styles, and full
tracklistings,woohoo ! :

http://feeds.feedburner.com/beatsinspace

also once a week from resident advisor magazine, mixes by the likes of
troy pierce, amé, chateau flight etc

http://www.residentadvisor.net/podcast.asp

also, was at the pod last saturday, and a guy called frank cussen
( local lad - think he released a single last year) played some great
tracks - v deep, minimal stuff, 2hrs of which can be downloaded
from...

It's a bad sign that the code I had to enter for megaupload was "PCP"!
I tried getting the podcasts from residentadvisor.net, no joy though.
I don't use iTunes and they don't really seem to care for other media
players. Damn you Steve Jobs!

I got "The Last Resort" by Trentmoller. I don't sound anything like
him dammit! "Welcome me into your soul" (?), the first track anyway,
is superb. It then goes a bit Four Tet and boring which is a bit sad.
Still though, that's me listening to it on the way into work i.e.
nothing sounds good then!

Brian could you upload the MANDY podcast please? I would be most
grateful!

Also does anyone have any tips on good drum based electronica? I'm all
out of new things and there's nothing I can find that is really
'Beaty' (please note: Not the Chemical Brothers or Fatboy please!).

it's all in the keywords. google djs/producers of your choice, + megaupload and that should turn up forums with more than enough links (some will have expired), and some also have tracklistings.
for example :
http://www.teknoscape.com.au/forums/printthread.php?t=17611&page=5&pp=40

just found these by mandy - i haven't checked them out:
http://www.megaupload.com/?d=Y0EAYLZ2
http://www.megaupload.com/?d=IMPS6P0L

is it fairly straightforward to upload with rapidshare etc?

No comment Kevin !! (lol)

More like trashy commercialism ... When they add vocals to an
underground track to make it appeal to a mass audience, imo that's
selling out !!!

Why must you hate fun? :) Mash ups aren't necessarily selling out,
most times it's some young thing with basic software bringing tracks
they love together. Hang your head in shame that you would oppress
them like that...

I'm back listening to DJ Signify again (still only one amazing track
but it's a long one so all good) and went to that record and CD fair
in Temple Bar two weeks ago. Still listening to my purchases. The one
I've enjoyed most would be The Pharcyde "Labcabincalifornia" and a DFA
sampler.

Whats the name of that track Funk, is it "Juno"?

Brian, have u have any joy with the side-chaining? i tried
incorporating it into a song i was already working on but didn't seem
to notice much effect either...because i'm having problems with
latency at the mo, i've kinda abandoned that track, gonna have to
whittle it down a bit for my system to handle it better, but a new
project is underway at the mo that i need to get out of my own mental
system...but just if there was anything you had to add to the SC
thing, welcome, welcome, welcome...

sarah, i noticed a section in the reason manual on efficiency/ways to put less strain on your computers cpu - things like not using both filters in malstrom if you can get away with using one etc - some tips there might help re latency?
also,i took down that (unnofficial!) file re sidechaining in reason. didn't work!... the manual has examples of 2 different types of sidechaining(in the section on the m class compressor) - tried the first one - really interesting! adds a lot more dynamics or swing to the sound.(though, i went to the pod a few weeks ago,had a brief chat with alex under(namedropnamedrop) before his live set - he said he never uses sidechaining. on the other hand a lot of french house producers-alex gopher, etienne de crecy, daft punk- use it to the extreme...different strokes for different folks)

Nice one Brian...yea i think i might have looked at the sidechaining
in the manual...ah sure its just something else thats around the
corner..the particular track i was bringing it into might do with that
kinda effect for the sound it is...wanna do something nice n
punchy...but for the meantime i've cooked up a little number ye will
find posted over yonder...

Oh and cheers Brian for the latency tips, i shall check it
out....tomorrow....too many late nights this week...new tracks can be
a little addictive...honest opinions now...be brutal if need be!!

that reactable synth looks amazing - very sci-fi/futuristic... but
then radios and televisions would have looked amazing to our great
grandparents too i suppose . just saw this from a guy on the bodytonic
forum about the software " I worked with the reactable software all
summer for a final project in college. Its good stuff, but not nearly
as responsive as you'd like... uses these fiducial objects and sends
an image back to an infra red camera. The software then spits out xml
data about what each object is (theres 96 or so of them), where it is,
what its rotation about its own axis is and how fast its moving. You
can then use that info for what ever you want. We used it to make an
interactive air hockey table. "

Thats a pretty good track Brian, liking the sounds used. I'm liking
the white noisy textures. Almost has a bit of an electro tinge to it.

Sarah, the Bjork track is called "Earth Intruders", and the new album
is called Volta, it should be in stores in May. It's annoying because
you can download the single in the Sates, but not here for some
reason, even though it's on worldwide release !!!

I was looking at the reactor lastnight, the table top synth...looks
pretty damn special alright, but i read a review, hmm not sure who by
again, but he was saying it is fairly good but just not as responsive
as he would have liked....not as fast as he would have liked..but then
apparently it was designed in 2 years from the initial concept, not
bad goin, when you think that in 2 more years it could be much
improved...not that i wouldn't get myself set up with it were i to win
the lot-o...

Yes that was quite spectacular...especially that first track...Top of
the Tower...gorgeous..

I shall have to check out henrik schwarz so i will..but then Brian was
made aware of the fact that i'm quite a bit more sheltered from a lot
of music than i thought i was...i only recently discovered Richie
Hawtin aswell...shame on me!

But yea that was cool..Great find Marcus....

Check out a couple of samples of Bjorks new album on her myspace site.
Hard to categorize what she is doing, but safe to say that she is back
to her electronic best. The last few albums lacked her usual
sassyness, but she is back with a bang. Not to evryones taste I'm
sure, but still top of my list of favourites ...

Just bought Minotaur Shock "Maritime". I'm... unsure. It's very similar to one or two things that I like but I am finding it a bit difficult to work beyond the twee-er bits. Definitely recorded using Reason, recognise the Grainable synth in a couple of places.

I am relatively unexcited about Bjork, sorry.

Haven't seen Bjork live before. Arrived in Ireland 6 years ago and she
was doing a world wide theatre tour and never stopped in Ireland :-
( ... But now is as good a time as ever cause she is back to her good
old electronic self. Her show is going to be stunning, if only for the
costumes alone !!! lol ...

Sorry you don't like Bjork that much Kevin, she is an aquired taste
alright. You either like her or you don't, there is no middle ground.
I love here for her pure left fieldness, her ability to create sounds
out of anything and nothing, and her ability to make you think about
what you're listening to, instead of just being fed the same boring
shite that's being played on the radio day in and day out. Her vocal
range is astounding, and her music videos equally ground breaking ...
But that's just my biased point of view ...

Ah she does have a to die for uniqueness about her voice
alright...Listened to her a lot years ago, kinda don't know why i
drifted off her really...but there ye go...Its the quirky vocal
drumbeat going on in Innocence that caught my attention..and the kinda
stuff i'm enjoying experimenting with is all that odd stuff, that has
a nice groove to it..I'm trying as much as I can to stay away from
'mainscream' stuff, which is why i'm not working with lyrics
yet...wanna get my head round really messin up some sounds...too easy
to just put stuff to words..theres a danger with me of it ending up
too basic...hmmm hope its not that way now...eep!

I'm not arguing about Bjork's brilliance. I love Debut, I have great time for Serpentine but the last couple of albums have been very, well dull... I dunno. What I've heard of the new album sounds like it would really be my kind of thing so I'm withholding judgement but lads, you don't have to hate or love Bjork, she has always been v comfortable with pop and things. She's aware of the 'grey area' that is the general population's taste. She has done an amazing job of satisfying that side of her contract and coming out with some totally left field stuff. I would be a fan but I would be very cynical about her output, I do feel that she is almost like Madonna for inviting on the produce du jour to work for her and help out her sound. I am aware that this is only my opinion! Please don't hate me etc etc etc...

Sorry, I've just been very busy what with work and all the travelling so my internet usage has dipped quite dramatically. I've been listening to an awful lot of music recently, the joys of flights and things. Over the past month these have included:

Caribou Andorra - He is one of my favourite musicians and the album does not disappoint. I would hope that he'll veer more towards psychedelic for his next one. Cannot recommend it highly enough!
Interpol Admire our Love - Just *because* right, just because (also I still have a soft spot for some songs on their other albums. Sad, but true)
Daft Punk Live at Coachella - Internet only and wonderful, started listening to it again because I saw them on Saturday in Berlin. Light show slightly dampened by ambient lighting but fantastic all the same.
Blueboy Remember Me - Bought EP on ebay, the postage cost me more than single. Totally worth it though.
Rough Trade Electronic - Compilation. Great primer on many things I hadn't heard before. Will cause me much debt on amazon soon.
Simian Mobile Disco Attack, Sustain, Decay, Release - *Bounce* *Bounce* *Bounce* *Bounce* (very happy stuff)
Kings of Leon Because of the times - Well three tracks in reality, I find his voice grates after a while, same problem with the last two. This is obviously their problem, not mine.
Ultraelectro - Compilation. Has a remix of "What Else is There" (originally by Royskopp) by Trentmoller. Powerful stuff elsewhere.
David Holmes - This Film's Crap Let's slash the seats - I had been meaning to pick this up for a while (I have a couple of other by him: Bow Down and David Holmes Presents) It's a bit dated but it is fantastically atmospheric dance music.
LCD Soundsystem Sound of Silver - I wasn't the biggest fan of the first album as a whole (too long and samey) so it was great to hear a properly pared down album with excellent thumping beats, more band involvement and less cutsey-isms.
Hot Chip DJ Kicks - Disappointing live but they have good taste, thankfully.
Armand Van Helden Ghettoblaster - "Touch Your Toes" is the stand out track, the rest of it feels rather generic really.
Felix da Housecat Devin Dazzle and the Neon Fever - Nowhere near as good as Excursions, picked up on a whim and listened to maybe twice.
Easy Star All-Stars Radiodread - Come on, it's a reggae version of OK Computer! What can you expect? Recently played at a party to great wonderment and drunken amusement. "Let Down" is savage in it's own right rather than just a gimmick!

Still to buy/download and listen to: Chemical Brothers, Bjork, the other Simian Mobile Disco album and many more. All recommendations welcome. I might give Groove Armada a go M. Are you going to Lovebox to see them live so?

Some good selections there ... Blue boy "Remember Me" ... what a
classic ... Still love that track to death ...

Will probably go to Lovebox now, after buying the GA album. Wasn't too
keen before, but I'm sure they will be brilliant as usual ...

Anyone else going???

Well i might just have to try and get a ticket in the morning i
suppose... ho hum.... ;)
Riddle me this....is it an overnight affair? Ooh I wonder...ah no
don't think Malahide like the campin...

And when it comes to what i'm listening to, now i'm ashamed to say
this but i kinda stick with what i know and love a bit too much and I
don't give new stuff a listen, let alone anything else...Kings of Leon
for instance, i downloaded a couple of albums, stuck them on a backup
disc and haven't touched it since....very very sad but quite a bit
true...

So i'm listening to what i know and love....Tori, Kate, Alanis,
Portishead, Zabiela, generally the stuff i listen to at the best of
times is female vocal stuff, ever singing as i've sometimes been...

No it's a one day affair (oooo sauce etc) but I'd find a b&b locally rather tan face the long drive back. Unless you can get a designated driver.

It's a very concious decision to listen to a lot of new music. I was just listening to the same stuff for a while last year and and that just got boring. It can be a pain though when you really want that one song and can't find it. Must stop purging the hard drive so often :(

How did you hear about the rave? How illicit and bold! I didn't even know that that kind of thing was still happening.

Sunday I went to see Glenn Branca at that Analog festival. It was a bit same-y really. I had really wanted to see Ikonono no.1 but sadly couldn't make it.

On CD I'm listening to Justice cross which is fantastic so far, really bouncy. Lots of Simian Mobile Disco (I'm starting to get a bit tired of them though!) compilations.

I downloaded about 1.3 gigs of Get Physical compilations. Working through them slowly but surely. So far so patchy but when it works (e.g. Mandarine Girl by Booka Shade) it really works!

had tickets to see branca, but mistakenly assumed it would be on at 7.30 like the friday and saturday gigs. drat. konono were brilliant - really infectious, dancey stuff - tracks that ran for over 30 minutes without getting boring. best electric thumb piano band ever i did see!... enjoyed them much more than the cinematic orchestra on friday, who were a bit disappointing - their material doesn't seem to have developed nmuch from where it was 4 or 5 years ago, and i was a big fan back then.
