I can obtain updates for K3 and P3 by using ftp but so far have failed to
get the latest update installed for the KPA.
Thanks again for your advice.

Unfortunately, your search for curl included descriptions so Ario hit
first. To be sure, simply open a terminal session use the following
command:
sudo apt-get install curl
and you'll have what the K3 utility needs. You can probably remove Ario
safely as it is a music player client that uses curl but does not
provide it. In fact, I'd not even heard of it until your message and had
to look it up!

Things should work for you with the curl package installed.

Thanks to you curl is now installed and Ario is deleted.
With the KPA Utility running I now get the message that the KPA is not
responding,
I have checked the menu and all appears to be OK.

Elecraft KPA Utility for Linux Version 1.4.5.4
KPA firmware file "KPA500FP0111.hex" verified
KPA Bootstrap Loader did not echo "D"
Remove KPA power and retry firmware load
KPA programming failed.
Remove power and re-try the firmware load.
KPA firmware load failed
I have checked the menu on the KPA and cannot see what needs to be changed.
Thanks for your offer of help.

The way I decipher that message, the Utility did not hear anything back
from the KPA. I believe you may find the problem between the computer
and the KPA500. Try a real serial port if one is available - if not try
a different USB to serial adapter.

Referring to page 21 of the KPA owner's manual, I am using the KPA/K3 AUX
Cable.
If I want to upgrade the firmware on all three units (K3, P3, and KPA) then
can you or Elecraft recommend a permanent configuration of serial cables
that will enable such a requirement?
It seems to me that if there is no answer to my last question then I will
need to change the serial cable connections for each unit every time that
I need to upgrade the firmware. The alternative is to take the advice of
Fred Cady on page 247 of his excellent manual.
Many thanks once again for your valuable help Don.

The Edgeport/4 that I mentioned connects with a USB cable, you should
have USB ports on your laptop.

I use what's called a DB-9 "ABCD" switch that switches one serial port to
any of four devices. The four ports are connected to one P3 (with a K3
behind it), one K3 (without a P3), one KPA500, and one "serial data cable"
that is moved around as needed for a W2, XG3, KX3, and another product in
development.
My personal computer is connected to a KUSB, and the DB-9 end of that KUSB
connects to a 6' serial "straight through" DB-9 cable to provide enough
length to get to the ABCD box.
I used Google search for "ABCD switch db9". There are a lot of vendors and
prices vary widely from $10 to well over $25. When comparing prices, be
sure to consider the cost of shipping.
I purchased several one-meter male-male DB-9 "jumper" cables as well.
I actually use two more ABCD switches so that I can switch a couple of K3s
between the first ABCD switch and a USB SO2R controller.
