I've been asked to develop a 2 hour compliance CBT that will have to
be time-tracked such that it ensures the user spends a full 2 hours in
it before getting credit. It will have several modules/topics (5-8)
and it will need to bookmark to the module/topic if the learner leaves
prematurely without completing.

The LMS is minimally SCORM1.2 compliant, with support for
lesson_status, lesson_location, time, score, student_name, student_id,
suspend_data, and nothing else.

I have experience in Flash/AS3 development, but little experience in
Captivate (although i have Captivate 5). Can something like this be
done easily in Captivate as opposed to Flash? I ask because its a rush
job, and i'm worried coding the timing mechanisms in AS3 could bog me
down. Any advice appreciated. Thanks!

There are two “time” data elements associated with SCORM.  The first is session_time (write only) which is the content’s responsibility to write to the LMS.  Captivate handles this without issue.  The other is total_time (read only) which is the LMS’ responsibility to aggregate the session_time(s) written by the content.  The total_time is what you want to meet your 2 hour requirement as a student will get a new session_time each attempt.

Hi Andrew

I know it doesn't help you, but my feeling is that timed courses are useless.

My workplace rolled one out a few years ago, requiring every manager to sit through timed slides, as you describe. Every single person I spoke with said they started the course, then let it 'play' while they did other stuff.  The few who legitimately wanted to learn from the course were turned off because they couldn't control the pace.  Forced timing doesn't work.

In our case, I think the timing was due to some federal mandate about requiring x hours of training on that particular topic.  It's a shame when poorly worded (or interpreted) laws lead to completely ineffective courses... it's the opposite of the intended effect.

This is all a longwinded way of saying I don't know how to enforce timing in Captivate, because I never cared to go that route.

However, I suppose you could set the timing for each slide via the timeline -- hiding 'next' button until x seconds have passed -- and hide the playbar for the duration of the project so the learner can't jump around...

Thanks Philip and Ray,

I'm in total agreement about the efficacy of requiring "timed"
trainings, however, the lawyers in my legal department feel otherwise.
I'm always reminded of the Ludovico technique used on Malcolm
McDowell's character in A Clockwork Orange to create his aversion to
violence.

Looks like I'll do it in timed segments in Flash. Just seems like a
lot of work for very little payoff.

Appreciate the feedback. If anyone comes up with other ideas, let me
know. Thanks!
