Whenputting the drivers into a new Win7 install, Epson's search-and-destroy printer identifier and installer decided on its own to update firmware; of course, it crashed. Printer is now stuck in partial-start state - when you power it up, Power LED flashes and beeps once or twice as normal, display starts to come up, then it quits.

What is the procedure to do a hardware reset on the WF-3520 (panel keys held down, timing...) to get the bootloader in the microcontroller to reset and go to the "Recovery Mode" function where you can install firmware?

Epsons are just all DUDs now. Biggest piece of crap cant connect to wifi cant connect with the usb cable and on a laptop that can it fails to print red or blue! No the Iink is not empty No the Head cleaner does not work I got 10 pages out a brand-new printer and it went Kaput! Piece of crap. Still trying a yr later and as soon as it gets to Firmware update it freezes says the printer isn't there and round n round in circles. It's the 'Fancy new cartridgeless' DUD!

Despite this is for a d different printer than my 7620 and it was a Windows 7 generation issue, it does not respond to the core problem which is the Epson Software Updater fails continually. Getting sent to a website that tells you to go through the process that does not work is of not value at all.

In addition Epson has refused to respond to direct requests for help with this. I would like to be able to download the needed files and update my fimware without using the Epson Software Updater. Oh yea, I reinstalled the upload too so I know it is fresh and running.

"You need more reputation points to vote someone down." Ha, more BS. It still does not help me. A search on the Epson website for eprom chip returns a variety of gadgets to hang a TV from the ceiling.

There are three routes you can take. First, you can call Epson and explain the issue. Sometimes they will be nice enough to send you a new set of cartridges. They may even send you a new printer if you're really lucky.

Before moving forward, check to see that the firmware update worked. If it did, go ahead and purchase an activation key by clicking the third link. If you want a paper manual and are unsure of how to do this process, click on the fourth link.

If you have Norton Antivirus, you may get another popup saying that the activation does not have a valid digital signature. Just tell it to always run and then click okay. The software always updates itself the first time you run it, and then you should see your printer listed in the drop-down menu.

I hope this blog helped fix your auto-updated Epson printer! For more DIY printer tips and tricks, follow me on YouTube at Kevin at BCH. I made a video walkthrough of this post, which you can view on my channel. Happy printing!

Boot into Safe Mode (How to use safe mode on your Mac - Apple Support) by booting with the Shift key held down and check there to see if the problem persists. Reboot normally and test again.

Hi tblack00 and others. No doubt Stopped 'Filter'failed is a generic message with assorted fixes. With help from several sessions with personal from Apple and Epson the issue was isolated to Adobe PSCC. Apple nor Epson have access to third party Adobe software. On a second 'remote in' session today with Adobe help we carefully reset each of the categories in Printer Setup which had been altered with installing Catalina and the current Epson firmware and drivers for Catalina. The only way it will print now is with Printer Profile set to one paper type - SC-P9000_P7000 Series_LLK ExhibitionCanvas and under Printer Settings the Media Type: Premium Luster Paper(260). Print colour is fine so I'm leaving it alone. Other papers may have other issues.

With much patience and persuasion you may get to more knowledgeable help from Adobe [where my problem originated]. Frustrating that we are forced into updating Operating systems that create huge problems. Good luck.

Thanks to those who responded, it's been a tough issue to resolve. The first call to Adobe convinced me that the problem was in Catalina which was misleading and not helpful. A well informed senior help person at Apple was able to isolate the problem and I feel I lucked out on the second call to Adobe by getting a person who knew printers and their problems quite well. With the printer working again I have more faith in online 'Help' and great to have sites like for discussion.

I recently updated to Catalina 10.15.7 and PSCC 2021. After those updates I updated the driver for my Epson P7000. Everything was working fine for about a week, and then one day when I went to change from my proofing paper to my edition print paper, the "Stopped: Filter Failed" message came up. I've been trying to resolve this malfunction for two weeks now (upwards of 25 hours working on this, often on the phone with senior support, one time even being on a conference call with senior support techs from both Apple and Epson). I have been through all the steps listed above -and more. I've reinstalled my operating system, and even installed the operating system on an external drive and booted up from that, to no avail. It seems to be an error somewhere between the operating system and the printer driver because I can't print from any other application -neither Preview, Text Edit nor Word will print. I can still run nozzle checks through the printer utility, and the printer utility works fine. I've tried printing from both the ethernet and USB connections, always resulting in the same "Stopped: Filter Failed" message. Yesterday a senior support adviser at Epson said they will be releasing a driver update at midnight last night. This morning, when I went to look for the new driver, it wasn't there. So I spoke with another advisor who said he didn't know why that update didn't come through, but that now they don't know when the update will be released. I tried working with Adobe, to see if they had any ideas, but their support was preposterously ineffective, and insisted that I install a strange software called "Bomgar" on my computer so they could take it over. After a few seconds of bumbling around, that tech said his shift was up, and handed me over to another tech who said he couldn't help me and I should go back to Epson. (I don't think this is an Adobe problem anyway). I'm really at my wit's end at this point. If anyone here can offer any solution, boy will you have my gratitude, no doubt about it.

Thanks Old Toad. I've been through all of that -within the first hour of having the problem. This has gone so far up the support chain, I've had an Apple advisor assist me in sending all my printer and OS logs, along with a screen video of the malfunction occurring, to the Apple engineers. They have not provided a solution yet.

Sorry to hear you are going though this also PhiliPhoto. I suspect the Stopped 'Fliter' failed message is generic and may apply to numerous issues. Like yourself I logged many hours and talked with a variety of personnel at the Apple, Epson, and Adobe 'help' sites. Some were a waste of time, theirs and mine, a few were knowledgable and helpful. I learned to always ask for a work order Number. After some hours an informed senior lady at Apple isolated my problem to Adobe by demonstrating that the printer was fine and the computer was communicating with the printer but I could not print out of PSCC. [Stopped 'Filter' failed.] Eventually I got through to a guy with Adobe help who [unlike some of the Adobe help] was familiar with printers and PSCC and noticed the setting had been scrambled. I've carefully gone through Layout and Settings meticulously and when using the Printer Profile: SC-P9000_P7000 Series_LLK Exhibition Canvas matte and Media Type: Premium Luster Photo Paper (260). The colours appear right, after two months I'm catching up on orders.

I have tried about a dozen times to update the firmware on my Epson WF-4730. The process begins each time, and then I get the message that the printer could not be updated. I am given prompts of things to try. I have tried all of them, and always get the same message. I have tried with just the network connection, just a USB connection, and with both, all with the same failure.

One thing I did notice is that when I power the printer on as instructed, touching both the power button and the upper right corner of the touch screen, I do not get the black screen with "Epson Printer Program Update Mode" that is shown in both the printed and video instructions. It just turns on normally, and once it gave me the message not to touch the screen. However, the Firmware registers my printer as "ready and standing by."

I am having same issue as Rebecca states, after trying several times. Please see attached word doc with screen shots and additional info. I am hopeful you can resolve this issue and if not how can I get refund?

Hi!

What mode did you install the firmware in? In normal mode (using one button) or in update mode (using a combination of buttons). The firmware from the website should be installed in normal mode.

My printer wf 3720 will not finish installing firmware and restart. I have downloaded and tried to install multiple times. It brings up the printer USB at first but switches to connection type network when downloading even though it's via USB. Then it says firmware not installed like the people above. What can I do?

I am having the same issues as the individuals above. The firmware update gets to 99% and fails. I am installing your firmware on a WF-4734 printer using the USB cable. I use this printer with my Omen Hewlett Packard workstation strictly with the USB cable. I have not experienced any issues printing content unless the cartridges were empty. In this instance all the cartridges are full with the exception of the 802XL Black cartridge and it is at 50%. The reason for the firmware change is I hate having to change out color cartridges just to print in black and white. Also, I could be mistaken but I think I heard that Epson changed their firmware to not allow non Epson updates to be applied. Have you heard this? Could this be the reason your firmware will not work with my printer? The firmware on my printer was recently updated by Epson and is now displaying version CM27J5.
