Now this is an interesting development: Bishop Amborse Moyo, the former presiding bishop of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Zimbabwe, will be in the U.S. in December. He might be available to speak in the Pacifica Synod on Monday, 12/5. It's short notice, but maybe there's a way we could use this opportunity.  At a minimum, I'd love to find a church where he could speak. Any suggestions? Ideally it'd be centrally located, but if there are no other thoughts I'll check whether St. Peter's could host him.

Thanks,
Jeff

Hi Jeff and Leah,

Greeting from the Churchwide office! I wanted to share with you an opportunity that is coming up, that might be an exciting one for your synod.

Bishop Ambrose Moyo, who is the former presiding bishop of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Zimbabwe, and the former head of the Lutheran Communion in Southern Africa, is coming to the US for a three-week visit in December.

He will be in Thousand Oaks meeting with Ascension Lutheran Church on Sunday, December 4th. I wonder if it might be possible to arrange an event (small or large) the next day (Monday, December 5th) somewhere in Pacifica Synod, for Bishop Moyo to talk about the Malaria Campaign? It could take place anywhere-- I thought of Mission in Laguna Niguel, because I've been there, but really it could be anywhere.

Bishop Moyo is an engaging public speaker (in fact, you've seen him before-- he's the African bishop in the first ELCA Malaria Campaign video), and he could tell some first-hand stories about what the malaria situation is like in Zimbabwe and other places in Southern Africa, and the difference that ELCA Malaria Campaign funds are making in people's lives. I think it could be a very compelling event.

Is this something you'd be willing to jump on? I realize it's Lent, and short notice, but I thought the opportunity was too good to pass up.

Peace,
Jessica

Thanks, Nancy!

I've contacted Hope Lutheran in Temecula to see if they'd be willing to host the Bishop's talk.  If anyone has other thoughts on possible places, in case Hope Lutheran doesn't work out, please let me know.

In addition to logistics, we're going to need publicity, such as flyers and press releases, and will need to get them in the media's hands.  We'll also need to coordinate with the synod office.  Nancy, would you have any interest in running with publicity?  I can help with the drafting.  If you'd prefer to coordinate logistics, we can certainly do that, too.  And if anyone else would like to be involved, please let me know.

Thanks!
Jeff

You are welcome, and I’m happy to help out.  Literally, it makes me happy.

I am available to run publicity portion, with the mild caveat of concern over the limited amount of time to get the job done.  With that concern in mind, a few questions.

  • When do we anticipate finalizing the location for the Bishop’s talk?
  • Do we know – or how can I find out – a good summary of the topic of his talk, length, etc.?  Assuming optimistically that he has spoken on the topic before, can we can an advance look?
  • I would like to get a biography of Bishop Moyo.
  • Contact information – presumably our contact person with the synod will be easy to determine; does anyone have contacts/connections with the local media, the Union-Tribune, local radio shows, etc.?  With luck, the synod can provide assistance on this score.

Finally, any and all volunteers are greatly appreciated.  I’m actually in the process of moving from the San Francisco Bay Area to San Diego, so November is going to be a bit hectic.

Thanks to all.

Nancy

Jeff, we could also consider Mission here in Laguna Niguel if it was an evening event, but I am not sure how well we could do to get folks gathered up this late. Is it working out at Hope Lutheran? Leah

Hi Leah,

I haven't heard back from Hope Lutheran yet though, to be fair, it's only been a day, and a Monday at that. Their office might have been closed today.  However, if you could check into Laguna Niguel, that would be very helpful.

I suspect it will need to be an evening event to fit into the work schedules of the largest number of people possible.

Thanks,
Jeff
