Hi, everyone,

I was hoping for your thoughts on when the campaign should start and
end. If we make it too long, people will start to burn out towards the
end. On the other hand, if it's too short, it won't have time to build
enough momentum. For the congregation at St. Peter's, four weeks seems
to be about right, but I think those times might vary by congregation:
four weeks assumes someone's up there every Sunday making announcements,
there's a display in the fellowship hall, and so on. Also, not every
congregation needs to start immediately at the start of the whole drive.

Here are some useful dates to keep in mind:

Ash Wednesday falls on February 22, 2012
Easter Sunday falls on April 8, 2012
World Malaria Day is Wednesday, April 25, 2012
The Synod Assembly will be in Irvine from Thursday, May 17 to Saturday,
May 19, 2012

I suggest we put the Assembly as the absolute backstop date and target
either Easter Sunday or World Malaria Day for people to be done with
their drives. We'd discussed the idea of trying to finish by Easter
Sunday and tallying up how we did at the Synod Assembly. That would
leave World Malaria Day as a sort of fallback deadline for the
congregations that get started a little later. Does that sound good?
If so, when should we plan on the drive getting started?

Thanks,
Jeff

Jeff, I also like the idea of using Lent as the timeframe and ending on
April 25th. I suppose it would also depend on what we decided to implement
in terms of a campaign as to the timeline. Are we still considering the
flower free Easter in addition to other options? Leah

Hello everyone,

I think the window of the campaign should be Ash Wednesday through World
Malaria Day. Within that window, each congregation should be able to find
something that works for them.

I also discussed the idea of a donation in lieu of Easter lilies with my
pastor, Jeff Frohner. He feels that we could support that (we would need
council permission as it is a radical change from tradition) but that our
congregation would respond just as well, if not better, to a simple special
offering. We have often found that to be true. In fact, of the two malaria
events that we have done (Movie Night & Baskets for Bednets), most of the
money was actually raised on the Sundays following the events when we
invited the congregation to simply contribute. Perhaps, a synod-wide special
offering would be as successful as anything else.

The African choir music does intrigue me, too. For our church, I could
envision beginning the campaign early during Lent and having a special
offering on 2-3 select Sundays. (Not every Sunday because we do special
offerings for ELCA World Hunger & Habitat for Humanity two Sundays per
month.) Our special offerings take place during Holy Communion; it would be
wonderful to project photo images w/ African music playing at that time.

For us, it would also be nice to close our campaign on the Sunday before
World Malaria Day as that is when we have done our other malaria events and
we have a bit of a tradition going.

That's my two cents!
Linda

Thanks, Linda,

Maybe it would be useful to flesh out a suggestion list we could send to
the congregations. That might influence the lead times involved, and
would also go to Leah's question.

Here are the ideas I've seen in discussion so far:

1. A donation to the campaign in lieu of donating Easter lilies.
2. Take up a special offering.
3. Family movie night and ice cream social
4. Baskets for bed nets
5. Pancake breakfast
6. Involve the kids. Let them vote on how to use the proceeds.
7. Set up friendly competition with one or more other churches in the area.

There are also some resources at the ELCA web site (here:
http://www.elca.org/Our-Faith-In-Action/Responding-to-the-World/ELCA-Malaria-Campaign/Malaria-Resources.aspx#structuring
or you can get there off http://www.elca.org/malaria from the Resources
link) and there are some activities listed in the Pacifica Synod's
handbook (available here:
https://docs.google.com/leaf?id=0B8ZDbAUt7CwfNzI1ZjM5YjAtODE5Zi00ZDgwLWFlZmQtNjQ0Njk5OTgwZDFk&hl=en&pli=1
<https://docs.google.com/leaf?id=0B8ZDbAUt7CwfNzI1ZjM5YjAtODE5Zi00ZDgwLWFlZmQtNjQ0Njk5OTgwZDFk&hl=en&pli=1>
or off http://www.PacificaMalariaCampaign.org from the "Education" link).

It might be useful if we could send a list that somehow ties together
thematically so that the drive would have a sense of unity.

Does anyone have any thoughts on how we might adjust the list above,
things we should add or remove, or ways we might make it tie together a
bit better?

Thanks,
Jeff
