Inquiry about negative mutual information values in image registration

Hello everyone,

I have a question regarding the reported mutual information that is negative. In a previous discussion, it was mentioned that we try to minimize it, and as a result, we report it as a negative value. However, if I understand it correctly, we need to maximize the mutual information during registration. Am I correct in this understanding?

Additionally, can you please clarify what a negative mutual information value means and whether there is a specific range for it? For example, is -2 considered perfect registration or does a value of zero indicate a bad registration? I would appreciate any further clarification on this matter.
