Carolyn,

I will not be able to attend the Conference call today, as my lunch goes
from 1:00 to 2:00 pm. Could you possibly send me any information that would
be helpful to go through later?

Thank you!

Hi Cheryl,
I don't know what there will be to send. Mia is going to walk everyone through how to use our new site. She has added a wiki page to our site. I will send anything I can.

Hello Colleagues,

A few questions have come up recently amongst my department as we are
trying to find ways to create more revenue for our school. I would like
to ask this group and see if you know the answer.

1) Have you ever retested students on a particular task? Essentially,
giving that student one more opportunity to pass their assessment. I'm
wondering if this is allowed, or if there is a particular rule about
this. Would this even be fair considering the students have already
seen the test and are familiar with the material.

2) Can we do more than one COAAP per semester in the same class? For
example, a teacher teaches one class for 14 weeks (trimester system).
That teacher currently picks one EL Civics unit to teach in that
trimester. Can that teacher teach more than one unit in those 14 weeks?

Any feedback is appreciated. I'm fairly new to running EL Civics, and
like many of you didn't receive much training. I'm sure I can also
contact someone at CASAS to answer my questions.

Mia, We do not re-test students on an assessment that they failed,
but will go back and test those students we missed the first time
around. We do more than two COAAP per year, this year we are doing
three. It is a questions of 30 hours of teaching before the
assessment may be given. Hope that that is helpful. Melinda

Thanks Melinda. That's helpful. I do know that there has to be 30 hours
of instruction needed, that's why it seems like it would be difficult to
fit more than one in a trimester. We do three COAAPs a year right now.

Dear Mia,
We run our class by the Quarter; we do one objective every Quarter and
one for the Summer Session.
Thanks,(Judy)

Hi Mia,

Our first year of EL Civics, when we only had 5 classes, I allowed students who didn't pass to retake the test once.  There must have been something in my training that said I could do that, or I can't imagine I would!  :-)   Now that we have 20 classes and limited staff, retakes are no longer an option, but we do offer a couple makeup test dates (pull out) for students who miss the official testing day.

RE: more than one topic per class per term.  I don't think it's feasible with the 30- hour requirement.  However, we tried something during winter term that was very successful.  We offered Objective 33 (Employment Resources) as a stand-alone, short-term ESL class (6 weeks), and the student work from the class comprised their portfolio.  The EL Civics topic was the only topic covered, and it was a big success.  We are considering offering other short courses on topics that may be interesting to a small portion of our overall population, and not necessarily a majority of students in every class.  Those "short" topics will now appear on the annual student survey--the students will let me know if they are interested.

:-)

Karla

Mia,

If the teacher has the time, I would think that he/she can intro. other
COAAPs. I would think, however, that finding the time to do so would be
difficult. In regards to retesting, I would say that it wouldn't be
appropriate to retest a student if that student failed the COAAP.
