Dear ESL Colleagues,

Hope you're all doing well.  We're developing a new advanced-level course for students who are not college- or workplace-bound, but need to develop their vocabulary to participate more fully in the world outside of our classrooms.  Wondering if you have any suggestions of textbooks or reference books that might be useful in covering REAL language commonly used by native speakers, including idioms and slang.  Our teacher plans to use lots of current materials from a variety of sources, so I believe the book would be used more like a reference than anything, but it would be ideal to have something that is written for instruction (i.e. includes activities).

Many thanks in advance for any suggestions!  Really appreciate it!

:-)

Karla

How about Cheryl Zimmerman's vocabulary books (National Geographic -Heinle)?  Maybe they are a little too academic?
