Beekeepers Rally Outside Ministries Across Europe to Demand Bee-Friendly Pesticide Standards Ahead of EU Vote on World Bee Day

Beekeepers, consumer advocates, and environmental groups will gather outside nine agriculture ministries across Europe on Thursday to hand in a petition signed by over 220,000 SumOfUs members, demanding that the European Commission finally makes pesticide testing bee-friendly. These creative and visual events, led by groups and individuals working directly with embattled bees, aim to draw the attention of decision-makers and compel them to listen to citizens across Europe.

WHO: SumOfUs (Europe-wide), Greenpeace Netherlands (Netherlands), The Pollinators (Netherlands), Latvijas Dabas fonds (Latvia), Romapis (Romania), Romanian Ornithological Society (Romania), WWF Romania (Romania), Buglife (UK), Foundation for Environment and Agriculture (Bulgaria), Slow Food Europe (Italy), The Federation of Irish Beekeepers' Associations (FIBKA) (Ireland)

WHY: On 20th May, World Bee Day, the European Commission’s Standing Committee on Plants, Animals, Food and Feed will vote to determine pesticide testing standards. Advocates will gather at nine ministries to urge member states to raise pesticide testing standards detailed in EFSA’s 2013 Bee Guidance document. If the Committee fails to ban all three bee-killing neonicotinoid pesticides, beekeepers and environmental activists fear that new bee-killing pesticides will flood the market, rendering last year’s much-celebrated neonic ban ineffective.

Not heard of it, Lorraine.

If I had known a month ago, BKAs and others could have promoted it.

Such short notice us unlikely to produce numbers.

Eric.
