Dear all, our last meeting in July at St Marys Secret Garden was wet but good. Zoe showed us round the gardens –mainly used for therapeutic purposes and beautifully designed in several small areas, including, of course, one for the beehives. (a small area has been cut out of the tree canopy to give the bees a nice high flight path)
The hi-light of the morning for me was undoubtedly hearing the sound of a virgin queen ‘tooting’. Zoe was lucky enough to hear this when she opened a hive, and recorded it on her mobile phone. None of us had heard this live, so she handed the phone around. It really does sound like a creature tooting away on the tiniest of tiny trumpets. All the more fascinating because it’s connected to a sinister event –the first queen to emerge from her cell toots; other queens still in their cells toot back, and then she kills them. Nature red in tooth and claw ..followed by home-made scones, jam an other nice things.
We agreed it would be useful to have a telephone tree for quicker and easier connection –for example notification of swarms. Here are details of some. (with location of hives, where known). Please print it off. If you would like to be added, please post your name and tel.no. up on this mail site so people can add you on.

Some useful connections for immediate use:
Zoe has a surfeit of small (half pound) jars which she is selling on.
She can also sell honey for you at Borough market, at a small commission.
And she can loan you an electric honey extractor (£15 per day)
Talk to Julian about selling honey at the Hornbeam Centre’s Saturday stall (Walthamstow)
Talk to Eleanor if you would like to sell honey at King Henry’s Walk summer fete (near Newington Green)
Sabrina can offer a lift to the National Honey Show in Weybridge, Surrey (27th-29th October). It would be good company if East London beekeepers went on the same day.
Diaries out now for our next gathering: Tuesday, 4th October, 7.30pm at 37 Dunsmure Road N16 5PT
