The Gyeongbu Express Line, Gyeongbu Line, and Honam Line, which are the main arteries of the Korean railway, all pass, and Daejeon Station and Seodaejeon Station, which are the central stations of the country, and Daejeon Madang Station, the highest center of railway transportation in Korea, are located. There was controversy over the construction method of Daejeon Metropolitan Railway Line 2 (tram/maglev/subway), and among them, the subway was in a difficult situation because it was financially unreasonable and the central government did not provide support, and eventually it was narrowed down to two types: streetcars and maglev trains. Due to concerns that expensive prices would harm the city's landscape, there were also low-interest maglev trains, but they were scrapped because they had no finances. However, during the mayor of Yeom Hong-cheol, it was decided to be an expensive maglev train, and the controversy was expected to end like this, but when Kwon Seon-taek was elected as the sixth mayor of the popular election, it was quickly overturned by the tram method.

Until 2022, it has been sluggish for a while due to the problem of overlapping some lines between Line 2 and the Chungcheong metropolitan railway and the construction cost of Line 2 more than doubled. However, it gained momentum in 2023, and on April 23, 2023, after Mayor Lee Jang-woo took office, the revised and supplemented tram construction plan budget passed the deliberation of the central government. This will allow construction to begin in the first half of 2024. This budget will be finalized through a review of the appropriateness of the project plan of the Korea Development Institute (KDI), and some adjustments are expected. In addition to the Chungcheong metropolitan railway and Line 2, the Daejeon-Sejong-Chungbuk metropolitan railway, which extends Line 1 through Sejong and Jochiwon to Cheongju Airport, is currently underway, and since Jochiwon, controversy has continued over whether to use the Chungbuk line or pass through Cheongju city center. It was announced that it would push for the passage of Cheongju city center only in June 2023, but the problem is that only the direction of the line has been set, and the preliminary feasibility study has not been conducted yet, but Cheongju City is already promoting the Cheongju subway era, saying that it has already opened. In addition, it is common for local media to confuse this line with the Chungcheong metropolitan railway. Although it was once grouped into the same project, it has already been divided into different projects in 2021.
