Seoul is originally a pure Korean word that refers to the capital of a country or national 首. In English, it is about Capital City.

Therefore, apart from its use as a proper noun, it can also be used as "Seoul in the United States is Washington, D.C., Seoul in the United Kingdom is London," and "Seoul in Joseon is Seoul." [35] However, it has already been more than half a century since the name was changed from Gyeongseong to Seoul and again to Seoul Free City in 1946, and the use of the proper noun "Seoul (Seoul)" has emerged, and the general noun "Seoul" is gradually declining in everyday conversation. This is because most people refer to the place name "Seoul Metropolitan Government" when they hear "Seoul" on a daily basis. This is an example of a general noun that has actually become a proper noun.

It is also the only native language (pure Korean) name among administrative districts above cities, counties, and districts, such as basic local governments, metropolitan local governments, general districts, and administrative cities in South Korea.[36]

There is a theory about the origin of the word 'Seoul'.
In the Korean language academia, it is generally believed that Seoul was transformed from 'Seorabeol (徐羅伐)' which was the capital of Silla.
Seorabeol (徐羅伐) is also an implicit translation of the pure Korean language of ancient Korean. At that time, it is not clear whether the Chinese character Seorabeol (徐羅伐) was read as Seorabeol or differently as it is now, but the prevailing opinion is that there would have been no significant difference from the modern pronunciation. For reference, there are quite a few records of Seorabeol (徐伐) in the Silla Dynasty. [37] It is believed that after many years of Seorabeol and Seorabeol in the Silla Dynasty, it became ᄫ → Sherul → Seoul in the Joseon Dynasty. In fact, in Yongbeericheonga, the native word corresponding to the Chinese character 京 is recorded as ᄫ셔'ᅳᆯ['있으며로38],에서도하고 [38], and in Samguk Yusa, he added in an article on the establishment of the national name of Silla, "This is why the meaning of Gyeongja (徐伐) is called 野 in Korean." The exact etymology of "Seorabeol" has not been revealed, but in academia, the name can be considered to have originated from "soe" + "beol (野)" in light of the fact that Seorabeol was also called "Geumseong." [39]
The name of Sabi Castle, the capital of Baekje, is '夫' (40), which is likely to be the sound difference of 'Sobeol', and there is a theory that it changed to Seoul. If 'Sobeol' was the actual etymology of Seoul, it means that the name of Baekje, which used the Seoul area as the capital for the first time on the Korean Peninsula, circled and went back to Seoul.
