On May 1, 1958, the Central People's Broadcasting System (CPB) began broadcasting television. The Beijing Television Station, the predecessor of China's central television, began broadcasting its first news program, Let's Go to Rural Communities. This signaled the birth of Chinese television, and it broadcasted only to the metropolitan area under one channel. Then, in October 1958, Shanghai Television began broadcasting, and Harbin Television began broadcasting, and between 1959 and 1961, television stations were established and broadcasting in 10 regions, including Tianjin. By the mid-1960s, 12 stations were broadcasting in densely populated urban areas, and by 1970, 30 urban stations were developed nationwide.[1] At this time, entertainment programs were very poor and not very good with other countries, and due to the influence of the Cultural Revolution, foreign programs were hardly imported, so they were not as interesting as Korean Central TV. (...) By the end of the 1970s, black and white TVs were expensive in large cities such as Beijing and Shanghai, and color TVs were more expensive, so it was common to see them at local town halls and other places[2] whenever popular programs were aired, hundreds of people gathered. Even though there was a propaganda factor, there were many people who watched popular programs.
